Is Martinez our best signing this year?

I also wanted him in when it looked like Moyes would go. And I must admit I changed my mind when Wigan got relegated.

But this summer has been a strange one as we have had the same manager for 11 years and we are now getting used to a new Manager who seems to have a refreshing approach and unlike Moyes has a big smile on his face. He is winning me over with his personality and approach but as a fan I am very fickle so come the End of October I could be on here comparing him to Mike Walker.

At this point the jury is out I just hope that he can become the first Manger to win silverware with Everton who has never played for us.

I Find it strange that Moyes didn't try and turn us into an attacking team in the last 5 seasons when we were stable, he going to have to change now at Man u.

He could set them up to play attractively. But he always reverted to percentage football. He liked the ball into the opposition last third ASAP.

Maybe Martinez will fall flat on his face and be a complete flop, but I'd applaud any man going into this club and trying to change a style of play set in stone for years. He has the talent here to do it I think.....I don't think he'd have signed up otherwise.

Martinez first season will not be perfect, we need the fans to believe in him and trust his beliefs, we're so used to Moyes solid hard working teams that some fans might not take to Martinez attacking gambles.

The obsession with 6th/7th place is not going to be of help here. We need a complete change of outlook about what we need to see as progress, for this first season at least. I'd be inclined to see 'just top half' as a result given the changes that we'll see. But it is still a season we can achieve on the pitch. There's ten different managers out there as we speak, so we have to put it into that context. I have high hopes for those cup competitions.

I think we need to be ready for a bumpy start.

Martinez is trying to totally change our style, and that's no small task. It's not just the players needing to learn, it's also the boss. He's got so much to take in - so many players he's unfamiliar with.

I think I'd agree that top-ten is what we should be hoping for. But we'll need lots of patience.

I am not impressed by his signings but I will give him a season before judging him. If he can keep us in the top 7 then I would say he is our best signing this summer.

Winning a cup isn't a progress. Boro, Wigan, Portsmouth had done that and where are they now? The league is the competition that will raise a club's reputation. To get into top 4/5 consistantly then that is a progress.

Winning a cup for a team that hasn't for 18 years would be progress.

Winning a cup and maintaining a respectable league position would be progress. Ultimately top 4 has to be the long-term goal, but a respectable league position and a cup would be progress in the meantime.

Not for me. The Premier League is the one we shall aim to do well. Winning a cup won't raise a club's reputation in the globe. If you go though 38 games and get 4th, that will.

For me, a respectable league position is 7th at least.

Yeah you're right a cup and 7th will do for me.

A trophy is a trophy. Fourth place ain't.

Yes but what I mean is a local trophy won't get more people know/support Everton. Perhaps doing well in the league will because it is a long progress and the Premier League has a global market.
