Is Martinez our best signing this year?

I also wanted him in when it looked like Moyes would go. And I must admit I changed my mind when Wigan got relegated.

But this summer has been a strange one as we have had the same manager for 11 years and we are now getting used to a new Manager who seems to have a refreshing approach and unlike Moyes has a big smile on his face.

At Wigan, Martinez seemed to have more than his fair share of bad decisions go against him in the league, over a few seasons. Some it due to misreading some mesmerising Wigan play when they hit top form. The benefit of the doubt seemed to go against little Wigan more often than not, imo. Hopefully that will change now he's manager of Everton.

(Hello first post. Excited about Roberto Martinez's Everton.)

20 October 2012. Roberto Martinez claims Wigan were denied a point at Swansea after Arouna Kone's late effort was ruled out for offside.

Trailing 2-1 with 18 minutes left, the Ivorian striker headed home from a left-wing cross by Jean Beausejour. The goal was ruled out but TV replays showed Kone was level with Swansea skipper Ashley Williams.

I seem to recollect that we have finished 4th and we have finished 5th on a few occasions but we don't talk about that as much as the FA Cup 18yrs ago. We also talk about the semis more than the 5th places. Its the Cup everytime with a reasonable finish. I would gladly sacrafice 3-4 places to win a Cup. 30 years from now the Cup would be in our history and still talked of yet somehow I don't think 5th or 6th place will.

A few years ago when I realised Moyes limitations would never change it was depressing, the whole cabal of english league managers were complete and utter shte absolute clones of Moyes. Perhaps they were stamped out in a secret underground factory under the Pennines replete with stock phrases of banal cntery I really don't know. But I knew under Kenwright to play decent football, excite, entertain and actually win something swapping Moyes for another lookey-likey could be terminal.

Then I saw Roberto's Swansea City.

Swansea had been wound up as a club in '85 surviving only to just avoid relegation to the conference in 2003 - minutes away from bankruptcy. Yet Martinez came along in 2007 and rebuilt this most unpromising club he threw the rule book out that says you can't play footy in the lower leagues and won the division bringing in unknowns and players nailed as failures providing the bedrock of what Swansea have today.

I followed his career after seeing Swansea hoping and praying the stars might align one day to bring him here but knew it couldn't happen. Anyone with an inkling could see the impossible task of Wigan but he never gave up, moaned or slunk into depression and it was no surprise Villa come in for him. Lucky Villa I thought...but astonishingly he turned them down and then incredibly (and joy upon joy) he turned down the leper colony at our old place.

It was then I knew - I fckin knew it was destiny absolute fckin destiny he was chosen!

Roberto Martinez is unique he thinks differently to the noddys in the pack because he is intelligent, brave and loyal attributes perhaps only Wenger can boast in the English game.

By god we should be dancing in the streets having Roberto already his work has lifted the spirits - oh yes, he is our most important signing.

Can't say I fully agree with you mate, but I admire your optimism.

I meanwhile, am firmly perched on the proverbial fence yearning to fall onto the side of Martinez.

winning a cup gives recognition to the players and the club and becomes a beacon in the history of the club just like winning the league and very much unlike coming 4th in the leaugue -
it is easier to win silverware than to win the league - so my first wish for our first couple of seasons under Martinez is some silverware with a descent league position (top half) - attractive positive football will be a bonus

well said

@ Nigel...very well articulated my friend and bang in line with my sentiments. Everton are on the cusp of a VERY exciting and successful era. This is because of RM...our most important signing by far. I suspect ManUre will be watching him soon thinking 'f#@k'!!

interesting observation flowboy - I still maintain that bad refereeing plays a major role in the end result and league position - some teams benefit more from it than others - consistently

We might take 1 step back before taking 2 steps forward under Martinez but I really want him to instill his footballing ways into this club and throughout the youth system. Its the only way forward unless you have a billionaire at the club. We have seen the old English methods surpassed by half the world that we are in danger of being left behind for ever. Martinez and his methods are the future of football in this country.

and by the way Brendon Rogers was not chosen above Martinez by Liverpool -
Martinez turned Liverpool down and stayed loyal to Wigan - good man

Referring plays a huge part in league position, remember we could have easily been relegated if a ref got a decision right

I don't know the true story but I can live with your one but no rs will admit to this tho. We need Martinez to admit this just after he beaten them at Goodison

Fair enough. Let me revise: winning a cup is a fine short term goal. If winning a cup is a satisfactory long term goal... we can discuss that elsewhere.

No, it's an end in and of itself. The FA Cup is a prestigious competition, one the elite clubs want and one we can conceivably win. I dont think that trophy or the LC should be viewed as a staging post to push on for other things.

The discussion of PL and CL success is not even worth having until a greater change occurs than a new manager with new ideas. There is no objective where those competitions are concerned.

Im cautiously optimistic about how Martinez will do. I will be honest, when we appointed him I was a bit "meh" about the whole thing. But as time has gone on his positive attitude and the noises from the players about the change in style has been a good thing. Lets not **** Moyes off totally as last season we played some great stuff at times, it was the draws and his apparent lack of knowing how to change tactics that was the downfall. I would be hapoy with a mix of pass and move football and quick interchanging but also be able to mix it up with fast attacking football. The most important thing for me is for Martinez to have the nouse and balls to change formations and tactics and players as and when needed. I think if he gets the balance right and can just add one or two more players we could all be pleasantly surprised with this season. Either way I think the players will be well tuned in to whats required come Norwich away and I think we will hit the ground running, similar to last season.
