Is Martinez our best signing this year?

He's transforming the way we play - and I guarantee that won't be plain sailing. It's unreasonable to suggest he'll do better than Moyes in his first season.

Even if he gets the transition sorted by Christmas, which in all honesty I think is optimistic, we've still lost 4 months of the season to the process.

On top of all that, we still don't know if we're losing two of our best players this transfer window.

I'd absolutely love him to get us there, but you can't seriously have the expectation of a top-6 finish.

the big plus is that its a very weak league below the top 7 and even more reason to think its the right time to try change/improve style. For some reason I see Arsenal as the most vulnerable of those above us, but sixth or seventh seems pretty certain this season to me unless it all really clicks immediately and we learn to counter attack. sixth or seventh just won't be as dull as it would have been... and maybe we will show a different approach in the cups. season after this one is the big test though

I'm happy we have signed him as manager, he talks a good game and I'm liking what I hear but I'll reserve judgement until he's had a season(or half if we are bottom lol). However so far so good and a marked change from the dourness that was Mr Moyes who looks like he's melting under Mourinhos heat already haha

no cant expect it, but its not unreasonable to believe its a possibilty Allen

I agree with that - but to say that those cautioning against over-optimism have no faith in Martinez is nonsense.

I just don't want to hear the inevitable 'Martinez out' crap if we finish 9th. Judge him in May 2015.

Jose is a bitch and is now putting pressure on Moyes over Rooney, its funny that Moyes is going to be spending money from the rooney sale AGAIN.

Yeah 'tis a weird scenario how Moyes will have sold Englands best player twice. I'm sure his transfer kitty isn't dependent on it though.

I agree with this 100%! We can easily improve on our league position. Christ knows why some people have written off finishing in the top 6, and are already getting the excuses in. How little faith do they have in Martinez?

It may be hard to judge him if we lose Felli or Baines - Baines very hard to replace Felli also a goal scorer last season - if they one is sold in good time maybe he will get the money to replace , but imo Baines is our main asset and maybe irreplaceable at this current time - if that happens as if DM was still here it may be a struggle for us as a team this season!

The board should refuse all bids for Baines cos of Fellaini clause, it wont be fair on RM to lose the best 2 players and will just make it harder but no way can we refuse a tempting bid such as 19 million tho, the more desperate Moyes get, the more he will come in for Baines and Fellaini.

But he makes the call. If our best players are sold and he gets 90% of the money then it is fair to judge him next May. He buys the players he wants. If those new players turn out not to be that good and we end up finishing below the like of West Brom and Swansea then it shows the manager is not up to the job.

maybe the more desperate he gets then the more that buying his old players for massive prices will look like he has no sway in the market. don't see him making another bid for either, and even more certain they wouldn't be accepted. even if the clause is there for Fellaini doesn't mean we or him have to agree to a transfer and the more he is settled into the squad in his right position then the more it seems likely the club and player will wait and see for this season with world cup looming. I am 92.3% certain both will be for the season

90% of the money are you having a laugh, the banks will take a bit for our debt payments - so get real of our financial situation!

Blame Kenwright then.

And when Rooney and Lescott were sold, Moyes received the full amount to spend right?

Say he really gets 90% of the money I assume we can all judge him fairly next May.

Moyes did fine before he started playing Baines, we all know he would have us top 6-8 if he sold Baines, same as he did without Arteta, Lescott, Rooney etc.
RM has had money to spend without having to sell which is novel to say the least, there is no reason, including selling Baines that RM should struggle this season.
That being said, whilst I think RM is a good manager, I think anything top half will have to suffice as a decent season because he's replacing a manager far better than many here can accept.

I hope that he is the Yin to Moyes Yang and that what he does is fix our broken strikers, whilst retaining the rest of the squads positives, if he does that we're in for a stormer.
If he fixes our strikers, and ruins our defenders, then it'll be fairly meh
Worst case scenario is that he doesn't fix our strikers and ruins our defenders.. Then Baines or not we're fked.
