Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

No idea, but for years the border has been taken for granted. It 100% was not raised by anyone on the mainland during the campaign though. Not that I saw anyrate.
yea, the only reason I ask is that I regularly hear from my Irish (RoI) friends living in London that they're shocked by the amount of English people that think Dublin is in the UK. One friend reckoned as much as 1/3 of Brexit voters he met had no idea a border existed (never mind what effect it would have on Brexit).

I doubt that many English people think Dublin is in the UK. But on the border, its a border that you in Merica (?) would think of as a state line.

That's true and I really hope it stays that way.
Yea, I thought the Dublin number was high alright but if you're old enough to vote for Brexit, you were alive when the border was more like US/Mex than interstate.

Most Brits didnt experience the border when it was a proper border, other than via news items concerning violence between the army/RUC (police) and paramilitaries.

Thankfully, most have moved on from those dark days.

yea, I agree, I grew up on the border in co. Louth. My family still live there. I was more trying to get a gauge of how aware people in GB (not NI) are of the border. Are people in GB generally aware of the border and it's history now that it's a sticking point? Is there any effort in the media to remind people of what the border was like in the 80's and how a return to border checks and unapproved roads is not a realistic option?
The vibe I'm getting (granted, from the States) is that there seems to be an air of shock or confusion as to why the border is even an issue (could be way off the mark there).

That is about the size of it mate. It wasnt a campaign issue, and no one on the mainland seems concerned/aware of the situation, outside the EU anoraks.

If we are to believe Bruce’s post election demographic analysis, everyone who was young voted Remain, everyone who is old voted Leave. Everyone who is old understands the Irish border and the history that goes with it. I doubt anyone under 30 has a clue. However, even though we all knew about the border issue, we didn’t know that the EU would use it as a political chip in negotiations with the full support of the ROI politicians, and we gave it little thought and even less coverage. We, in the U.K., still don’t want a hard border and have legislated accordingly, but it’s now in the hands of the EU and the ROI, who while burying their heads in the sand just keep saying ‘it’s your fault so you must sort it out’......

I think you may have misheard. They probably said a 1/3rd of the population of Dublin are in the U.K........

The EU have given us options that negate the need for a hard border, and yet the Brextremists are still demanding a no deal exit. A CHOICE that would necessitate a hard border by WTO rules.

So you still don’t seem to have grasped the reality despite your age.
