It's not my blinkered thinking mate. The nationalist people of the six counties have always had a party to vote for who would happily swear allegiance to the queen, the SDLP. Look where that has got them. Sinn Fein are actually working very hard across the whole of the island in order to prevent the catastrophe that is looming. They are making the case for special status for Northern Ireland to prevent the farce of people on either side of the border working to different regulations, more or less parallel with each other. Regarding the crossing of fingers, stop it. The refusal to swear allegiance to the crown is the very cornerstone of Irish history. Anthony Wedgewood Benn was obviously jesting when he told his audience how he got round compromising his republican views, as to my knowledge crossing your fingers is merely a childish way of dealing with certain situations instead of confronting them. No, the people of Ireland, Sinn Fein, the Daily Mail, Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg etc aren't to blame for all this. It's the British people who voted for this chaos. Oh, and Ireland will be unified a lot earlier than another 100 years mate.

I wouldn't be too quick to slam the SDLP for trying to engage in democracy while the Shinners took another, less productive, approach.
Sinn Fein run the risk of biting off the nose to spite the face. There's a whole lot of people south of the border who won't look favourably on their outdated crusade if it means there'll be a hard border.

Along with a huge list of other important stuff, no.

But 17.4 million well informed folk obviously read up on it.
So Remain never used it as a critical main argument if staying in the EU ?I have to agree it was a big oversight by the government who sent a leaflet to every household if they did not mention that ....
So Mays climb down which is fine by me to resolve the trade issue supposedly the Irish border question which the EU have used as a hammer to stop Brexit if it can be negotiated as a deal to leave the EU - I still feel it will be a last minute deal no one wants WTO rules both sides would be losers imo!

Not gonna lie, didnt give it a moments thought. Unlike them that voted leave.

Fair enough... it's not like Remain managed to impart what would unfold either.

The ensuing mess is yet another indictment of the state of public information in this country.

It certainly wasn't highlighted that much in the debates on TV....
Not thst it would have made thst much difference as NI voted Remain ....

At the risk of repeating myself, I voted remain cos I didnt have a clue what leaving actually meant nor entailed. And I was not confident that Rees Mogg, Farage, nor Boris had my best interests at heart. I applaud your willingness to hitch your wagon to them though.

Of course NI did.

It would be nice to think that if English Leavers had understood, before voting, what an omnishambles the border would become, they'd have thought about it more carefully.... but almost 1400 posts and counting suggest otherwise

I think, however, had May not called the GE and made the DUP kingmakers, NI remaining in the customs union wouldn't have been such a huge stumbling block as it would have had big support in NI.

Right... but then they'd have been powerless to stop the English Rees-Mogg nutters from just imposing a hard border, no?
