No what is being proposed and promulgated by the ROI is a way to keep NI under EU governance. The ROI believe it will lead to unification under their control. As you say, I have said before that the big stuff that crosses the border is already under computer control and the little stuff isn’t even worth discussing. This is a manufactured political argument which we are foolishly reacting to...
This, my good man, is a load of rubbish.
The RoI want the north to remain in the EU because it’s the only way to maintain the border as it exists today. The notion that this is some stealth reunification mission on the part of the Irish government is laughable.

You are about as informed as your average Tory regarding what "ROI" want and a united Ireland is waaayyyy down the list.
Brexit is more of a manufactured political argument to be perfectly honest.

That’s absolute toffee mate, painting the EU as the bogeyman again....

The ROI are being used by the EU to use the border as a negotiating issue. The ROI are more than happy to go along with this. Now perhaps you could offer an explanation of why?.....

Because the EU give Ireland clout in the fight to maintain the existing border setup and therefore, the GFA, and peace on the island.

“Britain must submit written proposals on how it plans to keep a frictionless border on the island of Ireland after Brexit in the next two weeks or face an uncertain summer of talks, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney was quoted as saying on Saturday.”

I think Ireland may come to regret its current stance. Some of these comments may well be remembered by the U.K...

Glad this is all sorted out now. Isnt it?

Still, we can make our own rules now. Excellent.
For us Paddies on here, it’s funny how protecting our national interests becomes us being an EU pawn to thwart the UK exit from Europe.

Not really sure what the Brexitiers expected of Ireland? Just roll over and ignore our own vote and special circumstances?

And no one in the U.K. wants anyone in either Northern Ireland or the ROI to lose out, either from trade or just everyday cross border travel. The only ones stirring this up are in Brussels....

Ireland was never a consideration for Brexiteers Pete. We have long been a military training ground and now we are an inconvenience to Right wing Tories.

You are demeaning the Irish remain vote by telling us that we are mere pawns in the grand EU scheme.

Seriously, you portray as the village idiot who is being taken by the hand in all of this.

Meant portray us.

@peteblue

In the 30 days after the brexit vote Enda Kenny went and spoke to every head of state in the EU, either on a state visit or at EU summits and bi-lateral meetings. In those 30 odd days he explained the importance of not having any border on the Island of Ireland.

In those same 30 odd days the Tory party were comparing cock sizes to see who would replace Cameron.

I presume it's some sort of hubris your throwing out with nobody can explain why the Irish government don't want a border.

If not ask your MEP unless.its Farage

Indeed, the border was rarely mentioned, if at all. I have never said that those who voted to Remain are pawns of the EU, I have said that I think the ROI leadership are being used by the EU.

If you start from the basis that there is a border between two countries on an island where both countries wish to have an ‘open’ border. Both countries are part of a greater union, the U.K. and the EU. The U.K. wants an ‘open’ border and has made many suggestions to achieve it. The Eu says it wants an ‘open’ border but only if the UK country remains in the EU and will countenance no other solution. The EU knows this cannot be accepted, just like the U.K. saying that there can only be an ‘open’ border if the EU country concerned joins the U.K. As Barnier has recently let slip, the EU do not wish to negotiate, their stance has always been ‘we’re in charge and you will do as we say’. There is a view that the solution has to be proposed from the U.K. side, yet trade and the flow of people across this ‘open’ border will actually go in both directions, but there have been absolutely no proposals from the EU country concerned as to how this may be achieved, nor have they considered how they would react if roles were reversed. It’s a nonsense......

Only they’re not.

I was in Ireland the day of the result, and for a few days afterwards as it goes, and all people were talking about in the context of Brexit in the pubs and on radio phone in’s, TV news stories etc. (apart from thinking the UK was batshit mental to vote out) was how the result would affect the border, and it came across extremely strongly that there was absolutely zero appetite for a fixed border of any description to be the solution. The Irish people wanted (and still want) frictionless Trade and movement with the province, simple as. Your assertion is therefore not only inaccurate, it’s down right offensive imo. You’ve created yet another false narrative that suits your anti EU agenda.

You’ve just repeated what we have all said, but thrown in a bit of angry comment. I will repeat, we all, on both sides of the border, want frictionless trade and movement. But only the U.K. is putting up ways for this to be achieved. What have the ROI suggested.....
