Arlene 'cash for ash' Foster is now whinging that the 'EU are not listening to us'. The DUP don't like the message that the north of the island of Ireland will not be leaving the customs union, the single market and the European Court of Justice jurisdiction.

DUP leader Arlene Foster has told the BBC that the EU's chief Brexit negotiator "does not understand" the unionist position in Northern Ireland.

Monday marks the start of Michel Barnier's two-day visit to Ireland, which comes amid rising tensions over the future UK-Ireland border.

Mr Barnier said the UK is contradicting itself over its Irish border policy.

But Mrs Foster believes Mr Barnier does not understand the dispute and is "not an honest broker".

In December, the UK and EU reached a political agreement in which the UK committed to protecting north-south cooperation on the island of Ireland.

It also guaranteed there would be no hard border, including physical infrastructure or related checks and controls.

However, the EU's proposed backstop solution to avoid a hard border - keeping Northern Ireland in the customs union after Brexit - continues to be at odds with what the UK government and the DUP say they would accept.

Mrs Foster told BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg the DUP would not accept Northern Ireland being treated differently to the rest of the UK.

She said: "Michel Barnier's trying to present himself as someone who cares deeply about Northern Ireland and if that is the case he needs to hear the fact that we are part of the United Kingdom [and] will remain part of the United Kingdom constitutionally, politically and economically.

"Therefore his proposal of us being in an all-Ireland regulatory scenario with a border down the Irish Sea simply does not work.

"It does not work constitutionally, politically and it certainly does not work from an economic perspective."

Mrs Foster added: "We've tried to get him to understand the unionist position for the people of Northern Ireland but he hasn't really responded and I'm disappointed about that.

"I don't think he does understand the wider unionist culture of Northern Ireland."

Mr Barnier is due to meet Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on Monday and will also speak to business leaders on both sides of the Irish border during his trip".

Michel Barnier: Brexit talks at risk of collapse over Irish border

The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator has warned that talks are at risk if the UK does not soften its red line on the Irish border issue.

Speaking to reporters on his third visit to Ireland since the referendum, Michel Barnier said he was “not optimistic” and “not pessimistic” but “determined” that the two sides can break the current impasse on talks.

He repeated recent declarations that unless Britain came up with fresh thinking on how to avoid a hard border by the June EU council summit, further talks were in danger of collapsing.

“Until we reach this agreement and this operational solution for Northern Ireland, a backstop [solution], and we are ready for any proposal … there is a risk, a real risk,” he said.

But he hinted that the UK would not have to come up with the final deal for Ireland, describing the June summit as “a stepping stone” to the October deadline for the wider Brexit deal to be completed.

The Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, said Britain’s “approach to negotiations will need to change in some way” if there is to be agreement over the issue.

Appearing alongside Varadkar and his deputy, Simon Coveney, Barnier said the EU was “absolutely united” on the Irish question but wanted to work with the UK to find a practical solution.

Coveney warned that there would be “difficulties” at the next EU council summitin June in progressing to wider Brexit talks unless the UK commited to wording for a “backstop” solution for the Irish border.

Irish and EU negotiators are getting increasingly exasperated by what they see as Britain’s refusal to move forward on talks on the border issue before the June deadline.

“The British government has red lines all over the place and expects the EU to accommodate them. We have red lines, so does the EU, but nobody seems to focus on that,” said Coveney.

“It is not OK for the British government to rule out a whole series of options and then pretend that somebody, somewhere is going to find a solution to find a way forward. The next move is Britain’s in the negotiations,” he said.

The UK signed up to three options for Northern Ireland in December. The preference on all sides is option A which involves an overall deal obviating the need for border checks post-Brexit.

Option B is a bespoke solution and option C would be regulatory alignment between Northern Ireland and Ireland, which the DUP says is tantamount to a border in the Irish Sea.

Barnier said: “We all believe the best outcome for all would be a very close relationship between the UK and EU.

“This is an extraordinary negotiation, very complex, extraordinarily complex and we want to succeed with the UK, not against the UK,” he added.

Barnier suggested that there was already a de facto border in the Irish sea when it came to plant and animal health checks and “everyone is fine” about it. These include rules to contain the spread of bovine TB and other phyto-sanitary diseases and infections.

Going further than he has done in the past, he said: “We know that there are already special rules and checks, I know that, in Northern Ireland compared to the rest of the UK. There are all-island phytosanitary and veterinary rules, or rules where food safety and consumer protection is at stake. And everybody is fine with that,” he said.

Asked to comment on accusations by Arlene Foster that he was “not an honest broker” in negotiations because he did not understand where unionist opposition was coming from, Barnier said his door remained open to the DUP leader.

He said he would not engage in “polemics” with the DUP and had chosen a path that did not involve “aggression” from day one in negotiations.

Varadkar said Ireland’s goal was an invisible border, not a united Ireland.

“There is no question of Ireland or the EU being interested in a land grab in NI, that’s is not our position at all,” he said.

Lord Kilfenian in trouble again...

Former senior Ulster Unionist Lord Kilclooney has been criticised for calling Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar a "typical Indian".

He tweeted the comment in response to a news story in which Mr Varadkar was accused of "poor manners" over his visit to Northern Ireland on Monday.

Former Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt tweeted that he could only interpret it as a "racist comment".

Lord Kilclooney told BBC News NI he rejected "false accusations of racism".

He also said that he did not intend to withdraw the tweet.

It is the second time the peer has been criticised over a tweet about Mr Varadkar.

Last November, a tweet in which Lord Kilclooney referred to the Irish prime minister as "the Indian" was described as racist.

He later withdrew the tweet. A complaint to the House of Lords standards commissioner was dismissed.

Of his latest tweet, Lord Kilclooney told the BBC that Mr Varadkar had been "most provocative" over the course of the Brexit negotiations and had "misunderstood the views of many unionists".

He added that Mr Varadkar had a "dismal lack of knowledge" about Northern Ireland affairs.

Lord Kilclooney also tweeted that "it is not racially abusive as he himself has confirmed he is half Indian" but that Mr Varadkar "has damaged North/South relations by being continually offensive and provocative to the Unionist majority in NIreland".

Alliance Party leader Naomi Long said Lord Kilclooney was "an embarrassment".

She told the BBC that the comment was a "slur on all Indian people with his use of the word typical".

She added that she wants the speaker of the House of Lords to raise the matter with Lord Kilclooney.

Irish senator Niall O Donnghaile, of Sinn Fein, said he would ask the speaker of the Irish senate to contact the speaker of the House of Lords "urging him to take appropriate action regarding yet another offensive tweet from a member of the House of Lords regarding An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar".

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MLA Christopher Stalford tweeted: "I don't know what John Taylor (Lord Kilclooney) thinks he's playing at but he doesn't speak for me. Absolutely ridiculous behaviour."

Typical bigot....

Still coming to terms with the fact that Lord John Kilclooney account isn't a parody account.
The thing is, without Taylor’s support, Trimble would never have been able to take Unionism to the polls for the GFA.

He was an astute player then but boy has he declined in judgement /shown true colours.

Now that it’s known that the NIO were made aware of Varadkar’s trip, it’s even more embarrassing for him.

He's an old grandad who needs to put the phone away.

Think it was slightly mischievous to keep his visit very much on the DL. Very last minute and selective in who was informed. He was also gonna get criticised for it but he's free to act as he wants.

He informed the NIO of his visit so he can’t really do much else.

Because the EU don’t really want a solution and are rejecting proposals out of hand. Even if everything existed and was in place they would not accept it. They want to keep NI tied to the EU and by extension the rest of the U.K. tied to its rules. It won’t let go or negotiate sensibly at the moment it seems....

Pete the EU have been asking for details on the UK's "high tech" since day one!

here's a Belfast city counselors best diplomatic effort to convince the Republic to leave the EU!

Well that's not offensive is it? haha!!

Is she so loyal to the Queen that she forgets she is Irish herself and so the famine and the derogatory form of "Paddy" apply to her also.

Obviously not clued into her own nations history. Sometimes i feel some of the younger Unionists (and Republicans also) have no clue what its all about, what was fought for or even the land of Ireland's history.
