Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

It’s only the EU that is causing the problem. If cheap U.K. products flow into Ireland, or cheap Irish products flow into the U.K. , it has no effect upon Slovakia or Poland, it only affects our two countries and not the rest of the EU.....
It's agriculture that is the biggest problem. It's still a v large sector for Ireland. UK could for example negotiate a trade deal with India for example and part of that is the UK import cheap chickens or pork or whatever. These then make their eay into Ireland. A much cheaper, albeit a lower quality product due to looser quality requlations in India.

How do Irish producers compete with that? Not to mention that produce can be reproduced and sold onto anywhere in EU as a bona-fide EU produced product.

This just highlights the protectionist culture of the EU and why the EU as a percentage of global gdp is shrinking............

UK doing what UK want and feck the rest who get in the way..well unfortunately UK is not the "super power" it used to be...an old phrase used to go "Englands difficulty is Irelands opportunity" and so it maye(excuse the pun) come to pass....Ive a few quid on with my pal that there will not be a hard border he thinks there will...love the DUP's stance on this when Norn Iron voted to remain...old habits die hard it seems...

I’m not sure if you do this wilfully or just ignore what is said. The U.K. does not want and will not put up a hard border. That’s it. We will not do it. There will be no hard border on the U.K. side. Nothing.......the only people going on about borders are the EU......Ireland are arguing with the wrong people, or sorry, are arguing with the U.K. as a way of arguing with the EU......

Pete I made this point in the previous page. If the UK leaves the EU on a "no deal" basis and wants to base itself on WTO rules then it has to treat everyone the same (which is as ridiculous as it sounds hence only a few despot nations work solely on a WTO basis).

If the UK insists on a no border being necessary with Ireland then it would have to be exactly the same deal with every one else in the world. That would be chaos.

We had a customs union between the U.K. and Ireland before the EU existed. Why argue the point from a Brussels perspective, it’s not needed.........

Do you not see that it's solely the UK that have caused this?

Before the EU Ireland and the UK had a customs union. correct. They then joined the EU on the same day to ensure the regulatory environment was kept identical. Did you think it was just an odd coincidence that they joined the common market at the same time?

It is now the UK choosing to leave that regulatory environment that is causing all the problems.

I agree that the problems are to some extent being caused by us leaving the EU. However, we didn’t join this EU, we joined a trading block and not a political union. A German MEP even posed the question ‘who is leaving who?’ by saying that it’s like the U.K. joined a football club but then the rest of the members decided to turn it into a cricket club. It is pointless the EU and Ireland pointing fingers at the U.K. and saying ‘you must come up with the answer’, because no matter what we propose, until the understanding of our future trade relationship is known, there is no answer......

I agree it's very complex and that's exactly why it was plain idiotic of the UK government to be so bold saying "we are leaving the customs union and the common market" at the same time as saying "absolutely no hard border". That was stupid politics.

The vote was to leave the EU. Yes or No. It's now that the likes of Farage are trying to go back in time and claim everyone voted for a Hard Brexit. No such thing. In fact the likes of future trade deals and Northern Ireland were largely ignored.

Fascinating to watch the DUP threaten May about withdrawing their support if the border is not resolved to their liking. Their loyalty to the Crown has always been of an a la Carte fashion.

Now that the pressure is on for a border solution, their intemperate language is no surprise. Talk of “rattling the Irish cage” is literally from the mouth of Paisley and could have been quoted from any time over the last 40 years.

The DUP lost the vote in the North. They campaigned hard for a leave vote and had no forethought of what that harvest would reap.

Flags over prosperity.

One last thing that tickles me on all this.

One minute you have the DUP banging on about "equivalence with the rest of the UK", "Not a single variation in status will be tolerated" and "One United Kingdom" etc. .

Which is fine in theory but....

What about other equaliy issues like gay rights and abortion etc?

On issues like that and many more the likes of Ballymena is as far removed from Brixton and Brighton as if they were literally on different planets.

But of course that suits the DUP so say no more about it

This is not going to end nicely. Either there is a hard border between the north and south or between the island of Ireland and the rest of the UK. Whichever is picked is going to have consequences, both options could possibly bring down the government by the removal of support by the DUP and thus put brexit at risk anyhow. (does that then cause the leavers to riot and further the divide across the country?)

The reason EU GDP as a percentage of the global is shrinking is due to the vast expansion in developing countries, a completely disingenuous stat wheeled out by the Tory press that.

Likewise the nonsense about 'we joined a trade deal...', when the bulk of the benefits from a trade deal aren't the reduction/removal of tariffs, but rather the non-tariff issues such as the harmonisation of standards and regulations surrounding goods and services. As Dani Rodrik has explained so well, you can't have globalisation whilst also banging on about sovereignty, and yet certain sections of the media (and on here) believe that's possible.
