I see the EU are really trying to help Ireland and some of the smaller countries......

“The European Commission opened up the debate on tax competition between member states on Wednesday (7 March), by asking seven countries to stop what they called "aggressive tax planning".

Tax policies in Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta and the Netherlands "have the potential to undermine fairness and the level playing in our internal market and increase the burden to EU taxpayers," tax commissioner Pierre Moscovici said at a press conference.

He said that aggressive tax planning had become an "unbearable" problem in the EU and that it was "part of the imbalances that have to be reduced."

"We must ensure that fair taxation becomes the rule without exception, outside of the EU or inside the EU," he added.”

He forgot to mention this was for the benefit of France and Germany....

You should be saying get a deal done, that will ensure everyone’s economic benefit, then using the deal as a base tweak the rules to ensure a frictionless border. That is the only order in which it can be done, and Tusk and co know it......
There is no scenario in which Ireland will not be arguing for a frictionless border. SF are nipping at Varadkar’s heels already and any sort of border infrastructure would positively impact on their vote. They will be in a Southern coalition regardless at the next election.

There will be a Nationalist voting majority in the North in 5 years. Brexit has been an energising force in Republicanism.

Ironic that the Tories have have clung to the electoral life belt of the right wing bigots of the DUP and inadvertently focussed minds towards unification and the break of the UK.

Careful what you wish for and all that.

The U.K. allows anyone to do whatever they vote for. If NI votes for Independence then so be it.....

This is now out of the ROI’s hands tbh. The EU will use this issue as they wish, there are much bigger fish to fry.

Are the UK not as guilty of using NI to try and force a favourable trade deal.
The north is being used as a pawn by both sides. Why not go with what they want.

I agree that the U.K. initially wanted to use the NI/ROI position as a way of saying to the EU ‘see, we can still trade sensibly ‘. The EU of course then decided to cut that one off at the knees, hence the current debate.......

I disagree. The UK are obviously using NI as a pawn to try and negotiate a favourable trade deal. It's tricky tho because their hands are tied by the DUP

Anyway, it’s all coming to nothing as Tusk is now saying that the border issue has to be resolved before any deal. And as the results of a deal are required before the border issue resolution can be produced, then we are in a circular argument with no answer. If no deal is done we will end up with WTO and the U.K. refusing to put up a hard border and then watching the ROI and the EU to see if they dare follow through with their own hard border.......

Pete please for the love of God I have tried to challenge you on this rubbish too many times now to mention.

If the UK goes to WTO rules it cannot simply refuse to implement a hard border. It would be forced to by the WTO.
