Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

Without Britain, the ROI would have been bankrupt many years ago. We should have not messed about and should have just sent the troops in and shot the lot of you, there, does that describe the way we hate you and try to do you down at every opportunity. Or maybe, just maybe, Britain has actually helped the ROI when needed, while never reciprocated......
Ill judged words Pete while trying to make your point.

I’ll pass on giving the history lesson.

Being of Irish decent, and having family members intimately involved in the original struggle and the gaining of independence, I find it difficult to understand exactly what many in the ROI are moaning about. The ROI only joined the EU because the U.K. did, the U.K. had provided the ROI with access to the U.K. markets and travel many decades before the EEC and then the EU even existed. Yet still they have this anti British hatred and love of all things European. This is not a problem, pick your friends and pick your enemies, but when we split from the EU at least stop trying to have it always.....

Pretty sure that's not at all accurate.

Ireland's first application to the EU was a full year before Britain decided to apply in the early 60's

We were rejected on the basis we were not economically sound.

In the mid 60's we applied again but de Gaulle did not want Britain as a member and so vetoed your application which meant Ireland's was ignored too. As was Denmark and i believe Norway or some other country over that way.

That happened again in the late 60's.

Ireland wanted to join the EU so it could have more trade partners and not have to rely on Britain.

It wasn't until de Gaulle resigned that things changed.

I suggest you read this

While Britain joining the EEC was a factor in Ireland joining, it was hardly the only factor. You should read a bit about the economic thinking of Sean Lemass and TK Whitaker. They dragged Ireland away from the insular thinking of DeValera and EEC membership was inevitable under their guidance.
Speaking of DeValera, you'd love him, a true isolationist.

lol

Pete would love the comely maidens dancing jigs at the crossroads

Sorry mate, but this is more about creating problems than solving them.......

It is a problem of trustworthiness. May said in 2016 that there will have to be a UK border on the island of Ireland if the UK leaves the EU. Now she is saying that the UK doesn't want to put a border on the island of Ireland. That is some about face somersault in thinking. May has not explained why she has changed her mind so dramatically. A major problem in trustworthiness on her part. Similar to her reneging on what she agreed with the Irish in December. Again, a question of trustworthiness.

It is crystal clear the word of Theresa May means nothing and she Is not to be trusted. This Tory duplicity will damage the country. And she expects other countries to trust her when negotiating trade deals. When she will say one thing one minute and the complete opposite the next.

Oh dear.

I should hope that Pete, will come to realise the stupidity and bad taste of that comment.

The highlighted bit was to emphasise the stupidity of trying to pit the U.K. versus the ROI. Like it or not, accept it or not, we are one people, intertwined through blood and history. I have said before that I believe that Ireland will rejoin and I actually hope that the ROI would rejoin with the U.K., of course these things will never happen while the bigots hold sway.....

Strangely enough, my family were involved in his protection.......but hey, it’s all history.....

It’s just politics, and they are all playing it, May, the EU, the ROI, the NI political parties. Each is after their own advantage and it’s time that the politics stopped......
