This explains it better than I can. Basically, they don't think that the DUP has been 'tough' enough about the Protocol, I think.

Cheers mate. Still scratching my head as to what is going on with Unionism. Seems to be all over the place.

Meanwhile down here Mary Lou McDonald has brought SF to being the most popular party, and at the moment she looks like being next Taoiseach. She is bright, intelligent and well spoken.

I disagree with SF policies on many things,. But the so- called establishment parties have really lost the respect of most people.

If there was an election in the morning, Mary Lou would be Taoiseach. Incredible change in the political dynamic.

What we're seeing is the ludicrous situation where a party that campaigned for Brexit doesn't like Brexit. They had May over a barrel, came out gloating that they'd weaseled a shed load of money out of her when she had no choice then act all surprised when Johnson screwed them in return.

They're left holding the baby in a country that voted 'Remain'. That's costing them votes. They then had the utter farce of their leadership contest and, along with their less than enthusiastic attitude towards COVID measures (most people reckon Swann did ok) and their collapsing the executive (again), their backs are against the wall.

They're now creating a 'crisis' with an election coming up to ensure everyone retreats to the trenches to vote their usual way.

They have literally created their own problems and, we're it not for the fact they'll burn the house rather than lose it, it would be hilarious.

They know they're fighting a losing battle, they realise how little they mean to the rest of the Union and they will stamp their feet and create havoc as they always do when they don't get their own way. It's not going to be pretty.

Cheers mate. That is really informative. I couldn't understand why wee Sammy was being blasted by loyalists. Getting quite complicated up there mate. Just let us keep it peaceful.

I see the Tories have throw the DUP under the bus again this evening

Ouch, on first look.

However if you were being machiavellian, you might suggest that this is a perfectly timed assistive interview to polarise the unionist vote ahead of an election by triggering fear - the DUP in real trouble trailing both SF and the Alliance party in the polls.

I see Tweets from the DUP now putting the fear of god in Unionist voters since the interview with the secretary for state about the protocol. Poor form overall for me.

Was wondering the same thing - the timing and all...but I reckon the TUV will benefit more than the DUP (which is probably worse - if that's possible).
