What happens on the Swiss borders with several neighbours? They're not in the EU. Just wondered.

EFTA. Basically inside the EU but not officially. "Regulatory alignment", free movement and so on.

It was ruled out immediately as one of May's red lines and certainly wouldn't fly with the DUP/ERG for the UK.

I think, and I mean I think, that cos they have their open borders with EU members, and all that, they are not in the EU, but have to accept some rules the EU make.

But that is pulling up some memory from a while ago. And I am reasonably sure it applies to some other countries as well.
I gather goods vehicles have to stop for checking.

Very simple.

The Swiss border is just that....a border between Switzerland and other sovereign countries.

Swiss people expect borders between themselves and Italy or Germany ergo there is no resentment.

The British imposed border in Ireland is the opposite.....a border drawn through the middle of Ireland against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of its citizens and has been greatly resented by those living along it for almost a century now.

Here's a complete rundown of the swiss border
https://www.ch.ch/en/swiss-customs/
but as Khal says, it has no relevance to the British border in Ireland.

None whatsoever, ruari.

The border in Ireland was expunged from the minds of native Irish people living on the “wrong” side of it in 1998 with the GFA.

It had ceased to exist to all intents and purposes.

If those people were content enough being in the UK to begin with the erection of a few customs posts in Killeen or Strabane would not be an issue.

This is a fact which goes whoosh right over the heads of Brexiters in England.

And as for uncontroversial borders between Switzerland or Norway and the EU.......it would be a whole nother matter if there was an unpopular border though the middle of Norway, put there by Sweden which was now proposing to leave the EU whilst the half run by the Norwegians themselves remained.

Wow.

When has the DUP ever given a toss about what the “nationalist community” supported?

It yelled “ULSTER SAYS NO” to every proposal which sought to bring equaity of citizenship for it.

Its founder led the mobs which forced the liberal Unionist regime of Captain Terrence O’Neill to abandon plans to reform society in NI in the 60s and introduce Civil Rights, which lead to thirty years of the Troubles.
