Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

I'm sorry mate but I disagree. There are elements of those posts that I feel, as a Brit, are anti British. For instance in a referendum 98% would vote no and 1% would be uncertain. And all Irish would be delighted if the country could be moved closer to France and away from the UK.

If I had posted similar about Ireland you would all have been all over me for being a racist.
2 points to raise here mate. Firstly if you find a post to be racist then report it as such, let the powers that be cast their eye.

Secondly, the Irish lads on here aren’t of a hive mentality, we do have our own thoughts and views. Maybe if you just view us as the individuals that we are then it might just illustrate how strong sentiments are running due to what Brexit will reawaken on our doorstep.

This isn’t an anti Brit sentiment, it is genuine fear for the future that is of little making of our own.

It passed me by mate. That said, like millions, I had made my mind up pretty soon into the campaign. couldnt see what leaving meant.
I’m sure you’re part of the majority tbh, as it wasn’t covered as widely as it should have been. It was always going to be the elephant in the room for Leave.

That's the thing, it's not an anti Brit feeling. At least it wasn't after the GFA and before Brexit.
When the Queen visited Ireland in 2011, she was welcomed with open arms. It was the culmination of over two decades of intensive work to keep the peace and develop relations between the two countries.
But then Brexit happened and it's pretty clear that the patronizingly uninformed attitude towards Ireland was alive and well in the UK.
The roll of the EU in bringing about peace on the island of Ireland can not be underestimated.
It seems to me that reasonable people like you should be pushing for a deal that keeps the UK within the EU but gives you the sovereignty you want. This would keep the UK united and avoid a return to war on your land border.
The rise of right wing hardcore xenophobia has set your country back generations and threatens to drag Ireland with it.

This is it completely. The Good Friday Agreement allowed us all to take a little bit of a victory from it. It was a grand fudge in the best possible sense.

As any peace settlement it needed to show respect to both parties. Everyone bought into the principle of consent whereby when, at some point, a referendum on unification is called the people will decide.

As nationalists we can play the waiting game with, in theory, a fair devolved assembly, all wrapped in the EU. The unionists still have their belief in Queen and country etc. Everyone can respect each other becuase each can view the statelet in whatever way suits their agenda.

Brexit changes all of that. And for no bloody good reason!

PSNI advise Johnson that they do not plan to police his proposed double border. Who could blame them?
I wonder if any of the Tory front bench or Farage and his comrades would fancy manning those proposed posts? I dont see why not. I mean, it's a piece of piss apparently. No danger attached to it at all. Just a mere technicality.

My reading of it is there wont be a border. It will stay as it is, with checks done miles away, or after time, pretty much waived as a "trusted trader" or sommet.

That said, he is a puppet imo. Hope i am wrong

Exactly. Just the same as the border between Westminster and Camden......South Armagh no different to South Somerset...or Thatcher's the whole of Northern Ireland is as British as Finchley

I'd really like to see that: Johnson with his clipboard and scanning machine and hi-viz jacket.

All the talk of a return to the bad old days is just BS according to Johnson, so he should be ok.

I have said from day 1 that the border and brexit are unsolvable. As in, and open border means freedom of movement. But that seems to have been punted. Freedom of movement that is, as an issue. Fine by me.

So if the border stays the same, no towers and stuff, custom checks are done miles away in a car park, and over time, become almost cursory, am I missing sommet that that seems kinda ok?

They'll become a target, surely?

Besides, as has been said many times, even the ghost of a border undermines the dual identity agreement of the GFA. It's destructive in an ideological and political way that wasn't there when the issue was settled.

Thanks "Boris". You unadulterated 'kin weapon.

Why? You do realise that random checks on imports into the UK, or anywhere else for that matter, do happen anyrate?

If the symbolism of an open border on Ireland is maintained as it currently is, and if cursory custom checks are done at source or in a car park miles away, whats the problem?

Like are wagons of Guiness going to be flagged? Wont happen.

It's infrastructure, it'd be viewed as a return to a hard border.

We live in a different country and dont appreciate fully the symbolism, roydo. This is a life and death struggle for some. People have sacrificed everything to have this status agreed under the GFA.

There will be a frontier that trade will be obliged to pass through. Be that 5 or 10 miles from the border it is still a physical manifestation of what the GFA was meant to ensure never happened again.

Our learned friend @Khalekan made a brilliant post the other day as to the likely location of these posts and I’m sure he’d be happy to share it again ;)

But that status wont be compromised. Look, I wish this whole mess never happened in the first place, but it has. If a few trucks need to go through a weigh bridge, (which they almost certainly do anyrate), and lob some forms at someone on a ferry, (ditto), I really cant see the issue.

I do it most days delivering to Portbury Docks.
