Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

...........These are not the only ways in which Varadkar has payed fast and loose with peace in NI. Lord Trimble one of the architects of the peace process, explained in a Policy Exchange paper last week how the backstop has 'driven (the Good Friday Agreement) into the ditch'. This is because - both in the way it was conceived and the way it would work - the backstop studiously ignores the consent principle that is vital to government in NI. As Simon Coveney said about unionist opposition to the backstop: 'We cannot allow one party in NI to veto any proposals'.
Dublin's policy was bold, audacious and very nearly successful. Varadkar has sought to impose humiliating terms on Ireland's larger and more powerful neighbour. He has tried to turn a bilateral peace process between the UK and Ireland into a political stand-off between the UK and the EU. And he has abused the Good Friday Agreement for his own ends, while shamelessly accusing Brexit supporters of endangering the peace process'
"Of course.....no bias in there at all......"

Is it really the will of the Irish people to [Poor language removed] its largest single market and put pressure upon a peace process, because that’s what he is doing......if it truly is the will of the Irish, then good luck with that.....
the will of the Irish people is to maintain a seamless border, maintain the peace process, maintain a good relationship with the EU and not get pushed around by the UK.
All he has to do is stand firm against Johnson and he'll be supported at home.

the more Britain avoids the mess it has created and blames Ireland for putting the GFA at risk, the harder it will be to correct this mess.

Seamless border, peace process, all the things that the U.K. government have promised ad nauseam. Who has even suggested that the U.K. is trying to push the ROI around, really. The U.K. provides the ROI with a large trading market and it works both ways. The U.K. provides the ROI with a Common Travel Area. The U.K. also provides the ROI with Air and Sea Defence, granted in order to protect ourselves. The U.K. has bent over backwards for the ROI since it’s inception, yet still we have this anti - U.K. rhetoric. In the past people like myself had an affinity for what was ‘the old country’, but eventually there is only so much animosity that you can take. So I hope Boris plays a very hard game, knowing he and his party are toast if he doesn’t, and what will be will be......

So finally the buffoon finally picked the phone up today to do his diplomatic duty and call his next door neighbour. Needless to say there was no meeting of minds.

Opposition and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin summed it up perfectly:

"To be absolutely clear; the refusal by PM Boris Johnson to engage with European leaders and our Taoiseach without preconditions on the issue of Brexit is unacceptable and is not within the realms of normal diplomatic or political behaviour".

United we stand.

And united the ROI will fall.....when France does what it always does.....

The current Home Secretary suggested on TV a month or two ago that we should “starve the Irish” to get their compliance.

Another Tory Brexiter opined that a gunboat in Dublin Bay would do the trick.

I’m just sayin’ is all, Peter.

I’m just sayin’

Don’t be silly...this is precisely what the ‘hard done by’ Irish want to believe and will latch onto, and it does nothing to address the position we are all in.....

Your only concern is ‘who caused it’ when it should be how can we fix or get around it...ridiculous......
You're very concerned about the GFA for someone who didnt think twice about it when casting their vote.
To blame the Republic of Ireland for destabilizing the GFA is the reckless act of someone who has run out of options.

After the bloodless right-wing coup last week they have lost the run of things and backed themselves into a corner, so they are now getting desperate and are resorting to threats and bullying against us.

Its good to have a united country and the might of 27 other EU countries as well as Irish America on your side.

Staying strong against the bullies.
