British MEP 'trending' over Irish history claims

British MEP Daniel Hannan has inspired a new hashtag as Twitter users reacted to claims he had made a string of inaccuracies about Irish history. #HannanIrishHistory was trending after Mr Hannan used Ireland to make a point about the EU in a comment article, but a number of journalists and academics disputed his claims.

In particular, he claimed Fianna Fáil had won every Irish election between 1932 and 2008, when in fact Fine Gael had come out top on six occasions during the period. When the errors were pointed out to him, Mr Hannan said "historians necessarily have different takes on the same event", adding "Please try to accept that yours is not the only interpretation."

But Twitter users were quick to mock the MEP with their own humorous takes on Irish history.

Derek Mooney, a public affairs specialist, referenced Mr Hannan's Fianna Fáil claim directly, joking: "Though @fiannafailparty had won every Irish election since 1392 (sic), it was dumped by voters after its 2010 #Eurovision entry failed to make the final, this sparked a run on the Euro and the banishment of Louis Walsh to ITV #HannanIrishHistory".

Steve Peers, a lecturer in international law at Essex University, tweeted: "The statue of Oliver Cromwell outside Parliament commemorates the Nobel peace prize which Cromwell won for ending the Irish Civil war #HannanIrishHistory"

Writer Dean Van Nguyen wrote: "Fionn mac Cumhaill burned his finger on the Salmon of Knowledge because of EU regulations on food labelling #HannanIrishHistory."

Another Twitter user told a longer tale, joking: "Michael Collins faked his own death in 1922 in what was then Ireland's largest insurance scam. Collins would later flee to America and flew the Apollo 11 mission. He would be immortalised in the song 'In the air tonight' written by his brother Phil #HannanIrishHistory."

The Nine Years War began when Hugh O’Neill discovered his true love,Queen Elizabeth 1,actually had the hots for the Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley. So the Plantation of Ulster, by the DUP, actually happened because of a lesbian love affair! One of the ironies of #HannanIrishHistory

Mr Hannan did not respond to requests for comment. lol

I love that one about Michael Collins faking his death and flying to the moon lol

Tache: 'No point' in backing undeliverable Brexit agreement

DUP's Brexit Spokesperson Sammy Tache has said there is no point in his party agreeing to something that is not deliverable.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke, Mr Tache said there are "lots of gaps in the negotiations at present" but the DUP will continue to talk to British Prime Minister Theresa May.

However, he added, the party has made it clear that unless there are legal means by which Northern Ireland will not be treated differently to the UK, the DUP will not support the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

Mr Tache said the nightmare scenario would be to have the UK involved in the EU for another number of years.

lollollol

He never fails to deliver, does he.

Meanwhile his own government has published plans for a “no deal” scenario in which NI will be treated far more differently to the “rest of the UK” than owt the EU has come up with.

And Tache’s own core constituency, the farmers of north Antrim and north Armagh, have warned him these proposals will decimate their industry, given goods entering the six countries from the south will be tariff free but goods going the other way will face tariffs.

In a normal society the DUP would be facing rebellion within its own rank and file and would be facing annihilation at the next election.

But as it stands, even its own nominal leader has been sidelined by its drunk on power parliamentary party.

The silly sod doesn't seem to realise that his "nightmare scenario" will all but happen in the event of this deal being passed as there will be a 2 year transitional period during which nothing will change.

You couldn't make him up. :hayee:

Sammy Wilson doesn't realise the nightmare scenario is already happening and has reached a point where a journalist has been shot dead on the streets of Derry/Londonderry.
We have had a dramatic increase in the level of terrorist activity over recent months but a gunman operating openly on the streets is a worrying escalation.
In any other country a gunman on the streets of the second city would send politians into a frenzy, here it won't even warrant them sitting down together.
Tory politians will condemn this act but continue down the road which will result in troops being killed on our streets. By entering into a pact with the DUP at a time when there is no government in Northern Ireland the Tory government have provided a justification for militants to take up arms. If you deny a people, particularly a people with our history, with a political path to achieve their aspirations you provide extremists with a rallying call.

The European Election in NI just got very interesting.

Naomi Long, very popular and more importantly very able, leader of the Alliance Party has announced her candidacy.

She must be in with a great chance of taking the third Ulster seat, behind Sinn Fein and the DUP.

Hopefully she does indeed succeed and boost the Irish Remain voice in Europe.
