Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

For the reasons highlighted in bold I am just shaking my head reading your posts. Do you honestly not see any potential issues with what you are suggesting given the recent history of border counties. Talk of heavy surveillance and mobile units in the area is like reading army press briefings from 25 years ago.

As for amending the GFA to accommodate an easier Brexit for the U.K.? Unbelievable.

Ok, lets hear your solution that doesn't ride roughshod over the 17.4 million majority vote for brexit please.

I assume you do believe in democracy?

The only way I can explain it to you is that (to paraphrase) it is like being an Evertonian.

To those who believe in freedom, independence and sovereignty, no explanation is necessary. To those who do not, no explanation is possible.

Ok and Everton has definitely caused me some hardship in life but I don’t suspend belief around it . I don’t say I think we’ll win the league this year because I believe and if we believe more we can win . Belief can play a part but We can win if we strengthen the side , if we coach the players , if we adopt tactics that suit us and not the opposition . Belief in an ideal but doesn’t get you anywhere , ideology is just that you need practical solutions to succeed.

You appear to have missed my other point , what does political correctness prevent you from saying or doing that you really want to ?

I think that where we differ, if we go all the way back to first principles, is that I believe that no price is too great to pay to be free and independent and sovereign. And, whilst I like the idea of N Ireland (and Scotland) remaining a part of UK, I can also totally respect those that are prepared to pay any price for what they see as their freedom and independence. Caveat, that in this moden world I am not talking warfare but quality of life sacrifice.

Yes, there may be big challenges ahead, but bring them on and lets get them dealt with before we all become a homogenous blob of humanity, governed from Brussels and having to all bow before their altar of political correctness.

And there is the Brexit madness nearly summed up in one short passage.

People might lose their jobs by the thousands....the economy might shink....interest rates might rise as Stetling takes a bath....workers rights and conditions might suffer greatly.....the safety of our food imports might harm our health.....the immigrant wirkers so vital to our economy might run for home.

But for a certain type of fanatic whom has gleefully swallowed the Brexit vision of the multi millionaires who will experience little or no financial hardships as a result of it.........no worries, it’s all good :)

How about the idea put forward by farage and banks when they were chasing votes we join the EEA and be happy like Norway or Switzerland? Brexit simply isn’t compatible with the Irish border situation , you can wax lyrically about technology or surveillance and sovereignty but you can’t square the circle nobody can . As a result as I can see the only ways around it are mays backstop or to remain in the single market both of which I’m not convinced are particularly attractive but they’re certainly better than crossing our fingers and hoping .

The utter irony of you throwing freedom, independence and sovereignty at us reasons for supporting a no deal Brexit is not lost on us when you have spent the last 100 years denying us exactly those things by ignoring the democratic will of the people as expressed in a General Election.

They'll be hiding behind the bushes at Jonesborough waiting to pounce.

Either you haven't read all my posts or you are being very selective. I made just such a comment (respecting exactly that point) wrt N Ireland and Scotland less than an hour ago.

I think you have got some of that wrong way round. Let me fix it for you.

The Irish border situation (at the moment) is not compatible with brexit. If one has to change, it won't be brexit.

Hurrah, we agree on a couple of things.

Canada ++ would not be the end of the world. It would depend on what was in the ++.

My solution as it happens is the very same as initially agreed by May- Brexit to happen as planned but NI to remain within the customs union due to our unique circumstances.

In those circumstances the border remains invisible, Unionists here get to enjoy Brexit, Nationalists can point to their Dublin alliance and then we can all work to shape our constitutional future.

This way also respects both the NI and the U.K. voting preferences re Brexit.
