Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

Bitterness and hate eh ? Kinda ironic coming from someone hoping that Ireland gets badly hit by a no deal Brexit as payback for thwarting your efforts to leave the EU on the terms you want.

The rest of your post is so wrong it is not worth responding to.

And yet you responded.

I don’t want Ireland to be badly hit, I’m merely telling you what will happen. You can dismiss it or ignore it, but it will happen if there is no deal.

You seem to think you are immune from realities. The realities are this, you are at the end of a land bridge, via the U.K., from the E.U. You are dependent upon the U.K. for your security. The U.K. was the first to offer the ROI financial assistance back in 2008 while the E.U. were prattling around. Trade between the ROI and U.K. is quite large. Any change to the £ affects the ROI. The ROI enjoys the benefits of the CTA.

The E.U. seeks only to use you as a means for Brexit negotiation. You can pretend otherwise, as you no doubt will, but your only true friend in the whole of Europe is the one you hate the most.......,

This post is so full of patronising and condescending guff that it is also unworthy of a response.

Don't bother with him. He calls anyone bitter and accuses them of hate if they are critical of any sort of British behaviour or attitude toward Ireland. I got the same stupid response last year. We hate the UK despite being members of a forum belonging to fans of an English team most of us have supported for most of our lives.

But he knows best because he has Irish heritage and all of that blah blah blah.....

Talks out of both sides of his mouth.

I don’t think we will. However any non Irish travelers should show a passport. They may still get in. The difference is that if found when here to have entered illegally via the ROI then they will be returned,... and vice versa....
A wing and a prayer approach then to managing the open border to the U.K. via Irish ports and airports.

Not exactly taking back control.

I know we’ve gone through this before but At present though we don’t have legislation allowing that to happen as it’s checking id of those travelling within the confines of the U.K. . You’d also need to recruit a fairly substantial number of ukba staff to work at ports and at airport gates they’ve never worked before , as currently they don’t check flights or ships from the north . I suggest they need to redesign several to allow formal and detailed documentation checks . Anybody whose travelled by plane or ferry to Liverpool which know it’s very different than travelling even to somewhere within the EU.

So we either need to get on with quickly or we have to hope we ‘catch ‘ those illegally entering when they commit a crime or try to work . I’d think the potential loopholes mean we probably need to start recruiting more border staff in the scenario as well , although more to tidy up the mess.

Pathetic. Stupid, myopic and pathetic......

On the news Republic of Ireland population flooding North to cas in on the low £ - in fact the whole UK economy exports boomed this month by nearly an extra billion £ - Brexit is really the root of all evils not - also proves that Ireland does not want a hard border ......only the EU!

You can have a night off Joey, you do know that don`t you ?

It is Christmas Eve after all x

Not casting any opinions on brexit here but the facts, acknowledged by all sides are very simple.

1- UK doesn't want a hard border with Ireland.
2- Ireland doesn't want a hard border with UK.
3- EU doesn't want a hard border between Ireland and UK.

So, given the above, if we should leave with no deal, my question is very simple. Who is going to pay for, build, install and run a hard border?

I think it is all being used for political manoeuvring and is a bit of a red herring tbh. Switzerland isn't in EU but is surrounded by it without a hard border in sight.

The EU doesn't want one either, which is why measures where put in place in the Withdrawal Agreement to ensure there won't be one.

Its also worth remembering that the low value of Sterling makes your imports dearer and more expensive for UK citizens to travel abroad.

Our currency was deliberately high under Gideon ........
