Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

I am not in Ireland either but I doubt it.

Every time an English TV reporter asks a SF person about it they give the same stock answer.

IMO Sinn Fein are happy enough to have a hard border as attitudes among moderate Nationalist seem to be hardening the more this is talked up.

And they think that furthers their cause.

In short, an economic downturn after Brexit would suit them just fine.

That's a tad unfair. SF will be anything but happy with a hard border as it would undo all the progress they have been part-instrumental in achieving over the last 20 years. They want unification of course but they don't want the conflict to resume. And they sure would not be hoping for an economic downturn even if its circumstance might progress their cause. Nobody in their right mind would wish for that.

No, they are happy to let things progress re Brexit and see what the outcome is, que sera sera. This is seen here as a British problem even though it affects Ireland, so they are not going to abandon all their principles and take their seats at Westminster even if doing so could affect the outcome. In short they are not going to do May's dirty work for her and help her defeat the Brexit extremists in her own party.

And I point the finger squarely at the EU and Varadkar for this........

It was fine thanks, mostly talking about the pub we are buying and how Brexit will affect it, and you........
Thanks for the concern and congrats on the endeavor.
If NI stays in the customs union, Brexit wont affect me too much, if there's a hard border, the effect could be considerable, both financial and personal.

It won’t be, business rarely just goes away, once the politicians get out of the way, everything will settle down....

actually @peteblue, seeing as you mention it.
Given that you've admitted that you didn't give NI due consideration when you voted; in hindsight, how do you think the EU and Varadkar should handle this?

I think Varadkar should have met with the guys in NI, decided what they want, and then NI and the ROI tell the U.K. and EU respectively, this is what we both want........no politics, this is what we want.....
