Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

Not being in Ireland, it's hard for me to judge but is anyone putting pressure on SF to take their seats?

I am not in Ireland either but I doubt it.

Every time an English TV reporter asks a SF person about it they give the same stock answer.

IMO Sinn Fein are happy enough to have a hard border as attitudes among moderate Nationalist seem to be hardening the more this is talked up.

And they think that furthers their cause.

In short, an economic downturn after Brexit would suit them just fine.

The proposed backstop is the only workable solution. NI would continue to enjoy the much needed benefits of the customs union; Unionists get to remain in the U.K. and there is no semblance of a physical border to appease Nationalism.

To me, the great truth which dare not speak its name is the simplest one.

Occam’s Razor.

This was a great chance for the British to right a great historical wrong.

They should have announced they are leaving the north of Ireland as well as Europe.

Let’s face it......200 years of the Act of Union did not work for the whole of Ireland.

95 years of partition has not worked for the north eastern corner of Ireland.

It is time to try sommat new.

An independent 32 county state, ensconced in the European Union.

Or, even failing that, let NI establish it's self as an independent state within the EU. Nobodys 100% happy but hopefully nob.... actually na, that could be a mess.

The backstop May agreed to is the only viable solution at the moment.

It's time to reverse the process and send the plantation back home. I'm sure the Scots will welcome their kinsmen back with open arms...wont they....?

It has certainly been brought closer by Brexit, of that I am in no doubt.

It’s also likely that the solution to the border will also accelerate the break up of the entire U.K.

More than a mess, an absolute disaster. It would be similar to unionist domination 1922 - 1972 except worse.

I think you're probably right. I doubt there'll be a full return to what went before.
But if there's any physical border, it'll become a target and a backward step.
What happened during and after the peace process is unique and, to an extent, unheard of. For it to be undone because a bunch of English nationalists felt that their identity was being threatened, would be one of the greatest dissapointments in modern politics.

Not really, for an agreement between the U.K. and the EU to be compromised because of a potential threat from a small group of Terrorists shooting up a border post, might just pip that......

What would be the best and most sensible solution for all parties ?

I think everyone agrees that a hard border is out of the question, so what are the alternatives being put forward that will respect the GFA ?

Who knows. As was raised at PMQ’s and largely ignored in here, the U.K. will not build a border, the ROI will not build a border, so who exactly is going to build one....answers please.....
