Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

I agree, I’ve not seen one detailed Remainer response to resolving this issue either......
This situation was not created by the Remainers mate. The Brexiteers were very quiet about the Irish border before the referendum. They were busily talking up being swamped by Muslims and other such nonsense. If they are now responsible for the creation of the problem then they could at least have studied the border problem sufficiently. They didn't. If they didn't have a plan, shame on them. As I say, laughable.

We’ve been through this many times. The situation was created by the Leave vote, everyone and his dog understands this. This does not however resolve the issue that no one thought about. Merely washing hands and saying they did it doesn’t really do it a lot of good. There is also a similar situation in Cyprus, where Cypriots actually live within the U.K. border, yet strangely there doesn’t seem to be a problem with that border and the EU......

Not to be too facetious but are you suggesting we use UN troops and a buffer zone at the Irish border ?

There are no UN troops between the U.K. and the EU on the island of Cyprus. There is a buffer zone between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots......

There is a buffer zone on the island though agreed, With UN troops stationed there ? A buffer zone of over 100 Miles separating the two sides . I accepted I was being facetious in my post but you can see the point , that it’s hardly a glowing example of how to have a divide between two nations .

The main point though is that Cyprus has a hard border and we’ve got the good Friday agreement .

This is entirely my point. Why would Johnson and his mates try to frighten the electorate with scare stories about Turks coming over here in their droves (29 million Romanians anybody?) when they've not even thought of what's going on around their border with the Republic of Ireland? They've not solved that problem in 800 years, so why does Johnson think he knows the answer now? The man is a complete dimwit, all bluster. Laughable.

I am not laughing over the border issue the answer lies with the EU - who have raised the issue to try and stop the UK leaving i.e. Brexit- Mays panic backstop deal will see her go in the Autumn along with the chequers deal being chucked ... only Europe sees a border problem yet the island of Ireland has a different tax system, different vat now and the is no problems the EU have done their best to put spokes in the wheel over the Good Friday agreement the EU playing no part in starting it up.......
The unelected commissioner,s not intending in anyway to be reasonable since day one of negotiations......
They are now even thinking of Southern Ireland using EU hours i.e. The clock not going back or forwards so the North would be out of step timezone wise ....
I would love the clocks by the way to be left alone so we are in step it was experimental many years ago - only Scotland moaned about it........

I appreciate the reply as ever Joey but a question for you.

@peteblue Is advocating an open border between the Irish Republic and the North of Ireland.

Would you be happy with that if it meant uncontrolled immigration from the rest of the EU via that route?

Well Im not sure who is taking a pasting but it’s certainly not me..

Taking back control of borders means we can do what we want. We can stop people coming in or we can throw the border open, it’s our choice....taking back control you see.....

There will be no border checks between parts of the U.K. and the U.K. has said that the border between NI and ROI will remain as is.

It’s true that most Leavers didn’t think through the issue of NI, but nor did the Remainers.

NI will not stop Brexit, it will happen, but because the EU and the ROI dug a big hole with their demands, while the U.K. said we’re not that bothered and will leave the border open, the EU will have to come up with a fudge that allows Germany and France and the ROI etc to continue trading with the U.K......over to you Michel.....

@Foot Long Hot Dog has already called this one - but are you seriously saying that Remainers should have considered the issue of the Irish border in the referendum - in a vote to stay exactly the same?!?

And actually I do recall Major and Blair both warning about it....

So the North could not have airports or seapots if immigrants illegally entered under a new scheme ...
just like the Isle of Man that atm is not even in the EU - yet has airport and ferry terminals - no mention of that...... from the EU........
They are just doing here very best to block Brexit - the south already has different rates of Vat -tax etc oh and the south do 4% of business with the EU - confirmed today by the new BBC2 politics show even stupid Boris got his facts correct for once........ they mainly deal with the UK...........
The EU not letting Brexit move on as per usual -yes I admit the irish question on Brexit may take time to bed in - the EU are stopping that they were not even involved in the good friday agreement.......

May said there would be a hard border on the island of Ireland if the UK leaves the EU. During the last BBC EU debate at Wembley with Khan, Johnson, Davison, Leadsom, Griesla and the TUC general secretary, Frances O’Grady who raised the issue of a border on the island of Ireland and the economic consequences for jobs. Johnson had the chance to respond but never did. Never gave it a second thought. Maybe it was a bit difficult for him to understand.

Good luck with that. I asked this question last week and I am still awaiting an answer. They won't answer it because they can't - the two positions are irreconcilable, i.e. they can't have an open unmanned border and at the same time 'be in control of' their borders.

Why don't you just answer the question instead of going on an anti-EU rant every time you are asked something ?

The ROI is not in the Schengen area and ,unlike new entrants to the EU, are not legally obliged to join and they already have controls in place to count them in and out. We have discussed this many months ago btw......

I honestly cannot remember any serious debate around this. Both Leave and Remain are culpable.......
