Howard Kendall RIP

No, nor I until I checked. He got the England job right after that season, too. I recall reading Kendall was a candidate at the time but had no interest in it. Another good example of how the man had little interest in fame or attention.
if my memory serves me correctly I'm sure Peter Swales was Man City chairman at the time, and also highly ranked within the FA (possibly chairman)
Howard, having been at City for only a couple of months, was never officially 'offered' the position. Swales allegedly said "this England job, you're not really interested are you?

That was the end of that.

Sounds fair. I had a quick look online but there's only a few vague references to Kendall 'declining an interview' for the job. I can't recall where I read it originally but it was a few years ago.

Pretty sure when he was asked about it he said "No thanks, they should have given it to Brian Clough years ago."

Brilliant that. His achievements in the 80s were certainly well respected by the wider football public. I'd forgotten how many games were in such a short space of time at the end of that season, which eventually caught up with us at Wembley.

42 league games, two-legged League Cup games, potential FA Cup replay after replay at a time when the first replay was played 3-4 days after the original tie, no 10 day police order in place in those days.

Yes, 4 games in 7 days immediately before 2 major cup finals, it was mental. As Chapman says, Wenger or Mourinho would self-combust in the same circumstances.
