Howard Kendall RIP

The thing with this is it brings back so many personal memories as well as being tragic that such a nice fella who done so much for the club has left us. Imagine if it wasn't for Howard and the mid 80's never happened! We'd only have the fellas who witnessed him playing to tell us what success felt like. The personal stuff for me comes from thinking about my dad and him taking me to the match. I associate Howard with those times when I was young and everything seemed easier. He also came across as a bit of a throwback. When footballers were just one of us and not separated by fans because of the money they now earn. A footballer does something nice now and everyone acts like it's something that's not expected of them, in those days it was just them behaving normally. It's really true when they say we won't see the likes of him again.

Nice article, there have been some wonderful words said by the football scribes about Howie, really good to see.....

Indeed.

But why has it taken until he died for the media to finally wax lyrical about how good a manager he was and to laud the team he created in the mid 80s as being one of the best we have seen in this country for half a century?

Simple answer, really. It's because one particular club are heavily over-represented from sports writers, pundits and editors.

Still, I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of tributes from the mainstream media. Howard's everyman kindness is really shining through in those articles.

I think it's the fact he was the last great English manager. There's been none since HK to achieve what he did.

I was shocked to find out he'd died when my brother told me at the weekend. :( My main memories of Kendall involve the terrible '90s years, which I'm not going to hold against him because he was one of the best managers we ever had. Us being terrible was hardly his fault, considering Peter smegging Johnson was in charge. It feels like the end of an era and only yesterday I was watching him walk on the pitch with members of the famous '80s cup winning side.

The story about him and Martinez was really heartwarming, as was the one about the fan who wrote him an angry letter, complaining about the lack of effort put in by players, including a terrible Welsh player who turned out to be a certain Kevin Ratcliffe. Kendall responded by inviting the fan to come and train with Everton, and was just really lovely about it. I'm glad he's getting praised in the media for everything he did for us. He deserved it.

Indeed. Another Howard, Wilkinson, is the only English coach to win a league title since. As far as I can see, Taylor is the only other one to come remotely close.

Been racking my brains trying to think who you mean, then got it! With bloody Watford as well.
