Howard Kendall RIP

Kendall joined Everton in '67, I was 5 at the time and I can't remember anything pre-Kendall.

I went to Liverpool Uni, primarily because it allowed me to go and watch us at Goodison on a regular basis and first met him when I was in halls of residence there. A mate and myself were both huge Blues and asked him to do an after dinner speech for us in the halls, never dreaming he'd accept ( it was at the time that he was player manager and things weren't going well ).

He wouldn't take a penny, told us to give whatever we thought was a sensible fee to charity and nattered to us all night. Oh, and he had a few drinks as well :).

I can't remember what time he left, but we apologised to him for talking shop about Everton all evening and he just looked at us as though we were daft and told us it was his favourite subject and he could talk about the club all night, every night.

I met him briefly a couple of other times after that and he was one of the most genuine blokes I've ever met.

I'm not ashamed to admit to shedding the odd tear today and had to give my nose a good blow after that minutes applause.
That's a fantastic story that, nice one for sharing.

The world lost a good blue today, one of the best. And reason #1,000,001 why I'm proud to be a blue.

I'm no BK fan but one of the more worrying images of today was the lack of seeing Kenwright during the minute appreciation I saw Royle and Harvey but no Kenwright. I can only assume his illness is getting worse, as he never misses a match.

I have no ill-feeling at all towards BK but totally agree with what you said about his absence.

Love stories like that.

As you said, I can't remember anything pre-Kendall either, even though we're from different eras

Hasn't really sunk in this yet as it came as such a shock. Wish it hadn't happened on a matchday with that obvious distraction. I suppose the mourning can begin in earnest tomorrow and will continue up until the funeral before we can move on.

It feels like the end of an era. With him, Bally and Labby gone it marks the passing of the core of the great championship team of 1970 which was the one I fell in love with as a boy. Still got the school dictionary with all the players names scrawled on it which I've kept as a memento.

Lost for words at the moment.

I am a generation late so missed the era when Kendall did his magic with The Holy Trinity and the most successful period in our history. But since I became an Evertonian back in 2004 I have been so proud to have a figure like Howard Kendall entrenched with everything great with our football club. If only I could have witnessed what so many on here did back in the day. It was really graceful when Bobby invited him back to Everton when he took over. It was a reminder of that greatness this club is capable of. I was in England last summer and finally got the chance to see Everton at Goodison (against Arsenal) and if my memory serves me correctly Howard Kendall came out at half time for a tribute to the successful 80s achievements. It was such a wonderful feeling seeing him there with my own eyes. I'm sure he'll touch the hearts of many future Evertonians as well. RIP Howard Kendall. Not so bad afterall as you're alongside Alan Ball up there. Many would be jealous of that.

Birmingham City Football Club expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Howard Kendall, who passed away this morning at the age of 69.
The Club will be conducting a minute’s applause prior to today’s fixture versus Queens Park Rangers and all Birmingham City players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

Howard joined Blues in February, 1974 in a part-exchange deal including Archie Styles that took Bob Latchford to Everton.

The transfer was valued at the time as a British record £350,000.

Howard made 134 appearances for Blues over three-and-a-half seasons, scoring 18 times.

Howard was a fine midfielder, an integral part of those Blues teams under Freddie Goodwin and Willie Bell.

A great footballing man and a great character, Howard will be sorely missed.

Mate, you must have interviewed him at some time? What's your favourite story of Howard?
