RIP Howard Kendall: Former Birmingham City favourite's old team-mate leads the tributes
Kendall, who is best remembered as a player and highly successful manager of Everton, was also a key figure in Blues’ outstanding team in the mid 1970's
  • Birmingham City and Everton legend Howard Kendall who has died at the age of 69.

Kendall, who is best remembered as a player and highly successful manager of Everton, was also a key figure in Blues’ outstanding team in the mid 1970s.

A highly gifted midfielder, Kendall joined Blues in 1974 and made 134 appearances over three-and-a-half seasons, and scored 18 times.

He passed away in hospital in Southport this morning, surrounded by loved ones.

A minute's applause was held at St Andrew's before today's 2-1 Championship victory over Queens Park Rangers.

And former Blues player Joe Gallagher led the tributes to a player with whom he played on countless occasions and whom he regards as one of the best three players never to win a cap for England.

“I am absolutely dumbstruck,” Gallagher said. “He was a fantastic, fantastic footballer but as a man he was one of the best I ever met. He was a very special guy who was kind to everybody.

“We had that great cup run in 1975 when we reached the semi-finals. When we stopped overnight in a hotel for each round Howard was always instrumental in organising quizzes, golf days - first prize and booby prizes.

“He was always involved in things and was very clever and very smart.

“I broke my leg in 1975 and after a couple of days in East Birmingham Hospital I went home and Howard and his wife Cynthia were on my doorstep.

“It was so lovely of him to think about coming out to see me - that’s how special he was.

“The football world will miss Howard Kendall, I grew up in Liverpool and know what a king-pin he was both among Liverpool fans and Everton supporters. He was that kind of man.”

Birmingham City football club also posted a statement on Twitter: “The club expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Howard Kendall, who passed away this morning."

A host of the game's biggest names also expressed their sadness.

Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall who enjoyed success under Kendall at Goodison Park said: "A great manager, an even greater man. Whatever I did was solely down to him. Gentleman, friend, mentor. Will miss him. Gutted."

Former Everton midfielder Kevin Sheedy added his own tribute, saying: "So privileged to have played for Everton's most successful manager. Absolutely devastated at this sad news. RIP boss."

The late Howard Kendall

Paul Wheelock, Blackburn Rovers reporter
HOWARD Kendall, one of Blackburn Rovers’ best managers, has passed away. He was 69.

A Rovers spokesperson said: “Blackburn Rovers are saddened to learn of the death of former player and manager Howard Kendall. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”

Newly relegated Rovers were at a low ebb when Kendall was appointed as the club’s player-manager in June 1979.

After a testing start to his managerial career the rookie boss led Rovers on a remarkable run of 14 victories and one draw – including a sequence of eight straight wins, which remains a club record – that went a long way to securing their promotion back to the Second Division at the first attempt.

And one year later Rovers went desperately close to a second successive promotion, this time to the First Division, when they missed out on third place to Swansea City on goal difference on the last day of the season.

Rovers legend Glenn Keeley told the Lancashire Telegraph this summer that Kendall above all else deserved credit for lifting the club out of the doldrums.
“We were having a bit of a bad time,” said Keeley, a defensive rock and virtual ever-present in the 1979-80 season, which also saw Rovers enjoy an excellent run to the FA Cup fifth round.

“We had just got relegated and the club was a total mess and seemed to be totally ambitionless. There were a lot of things going on behind the scenes that were disappointing to say the least
“But then Howard came in and he was a breath of fresh air. He was a brilliant manager, the best I played under. He knew how to manage people, he knew how to organise, and he was a great tactician.

“You could see this guy was going to be a winner.”
But while Rovers were not destined for the top flight, Kendall was, and in May 1981 he returned to his beloved Everton.

Kendall went on to become the most successful manager in the Merseyside’s club history, winning two First Division titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup Winners’ Cup

Alan Myers, Rovers' communications and commerical director, who used to work for Everton, said: “Howard was somebody I knew very well and had done for a long time. He was a fantastic manager, fantastic person, and a real leader of men.

"His achievements at Rovers both as a player and a manager will never be forgotten. I spoke with him only recently about coming to Ewood Park to watch a game. On a personal note I will miss him very much."

An Everton spokesperson said: “It is with great sadness that Everton Football Club has learned of the passing of Howard Kendall.

“The thoughts of everyone associated with the club are with Howard’s family at this difficult time and it would be appreciated if everyone could respect their request for privacy.

Howard Kendall was a lovely guy and a great manager for Blackburn Rovers. I will always remember having a long chat with him one evening when I had invited him to be guest presenter at the Mecca dancehall for the Blackburn Sunday League annual presentation. 69 is far too young to die for an active guy

What a fabulous player Manager he was he pulled us out of the doldrums and would have got us a second promotion if the club had backed him more in the transfer market. He was also a great midfield general directing play and putting some cracking passes in to split defences. It was a great time to be a supporter when Howard was about. Thanks for everything you did for us and RIP Howard. Sad day. Needs to be a minutes silence at the next home game.

So sad , too young to pass away . I started watching the rovers in 1979 when Howard had taken over . Brilliant memories of winning promotion that season on a Tuesday night at Gigg Lane when rovers fans had two thirds of the ground - what a night . Missed out on goal difference to Swansea cos Preston couldn't get a result against em . Had some good players like Kevin stonehouse, brotherston , Keeley , Faz , and a unknown called Andy Crawford , who scored goals for fun and of course Howard and Tony parkes , RIP fella , Rovers legend , who'll be never forgotten by us older fans .

A grand Player and a fine manager May His Soul Rest In Peace

My 72 year old dad is in bits over this. Described him as The Greatest Evertonian there will ever be.

One thing I don't think Howard is given enough credit for is actually keeping Everton up in 98. That is one of the worst premier league sides in history. The fact Speed went in late Jan should have really seen us being relegated. Yet he kept us up.

Genuinely couldn't give a monkey's about today's result. We have won the last 3 at home to a team that spends a gazillion pounds every summer so not too disappointed by united finally winning one . I'm not slagging any Person associated with Everton today.

Just called round to my ma and dads after the match and didnt speak a word about the game, just remembered the boss.

my arl fella summed it up, " the skipper (Brian Labone) will be waiting at the gates for the gaffer and i'll be up there soon to watch them"

Sad, sad day for all of us and especially those of us who grew up in the 80s who Howie made proud again!

Cheers boss, Rest In Peace

I cba about being beaten today, some things are more important. Losing Howie is like losing a little bit of myself forever, he was one of us, he gave us joy, he was a gentleman and he loved the team I love. The world has lost a little bit of colour tbh........
Saved me typing it mate, well said and completely mirrors my thoughts

Gutted, genuinely gutted.

Thanks HK for giving me some of the best moments of my life

Mate, you must have interviewed him at some time? What's your favourite story of Howard?
I had the pleasure to interview him as he was about to launch his last book. The question that seems to stick out in my mind was when I asked him what his favourite goal was for the blues. He said the one he scored against Liverpool in the Gwladys Street end. He talked me all the way through it. l was only talking with Howard before the last home game against Liverpool. I still can't believe it. I have never felt like this since Bally died.

Felt gutted today. Got my white bib home shirt that I wore as a kid signed by Howard at an event at the NEC many years ago. It's framed and on the wall in our spare room. Remember how friendly he was as he and Cliff Lazarenko(the darts player who was sat next to him) flattened the shirt on the table for signing. Happy memories. RIP
