Current Affairs Her majesty the Queen

As I understood it she was born in Nigeria and was talking about the genocide that happened there in the 60s during the Wilson government.

Hold on. Nigeria became independent in 1960. The U.K. was not ruling it. A Nigerian civil war broke out in 1967. What has this got to do with the Queen.….

Maybe that happened when Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II all those years ago.
It’s likely but then, equally, while George VI’s reign was terribly short (sixteen years) it wasn’t too uncommon for kings and queens to come and go.

This has been a huge reign in term of length and as such most people have known nothing else, and perhaps the idea of another has seeped away.

The monarchy = Queen so to speak, rather than the Queen being the monarch.

Yeah possibly.

I think all monarchs should have to pick a completely unique name. None of this II, IV stuff. Would be good fun to see them struggling to pick a name that has not been used before.

I can imagine that if I had grown up in Nigeria I’d find it very difficult to not have emotive personal bias about the genocide and also probably feel, rightly or wrongly, that the Queen could have done more behind the scenes to stop the atrocities.
I get what you are saying LL, I am just taking umbridge at her position as an academic and her pushing a personal bias. It does not sit right with me. Slavery was and still is an issue in Nigeria and not from the queen or the west. She might be better off accepting reality instead being blinded by hate. Apologies if I am sounding like a broken record ?

There is a big difference between respect and actually being bothered about it though.

Again I am sure there are a lot of people who think "Oh that's a shame, I quite liked her". but it will not change the rest of their day in any real quantifiable way.
"Oh that's a shame" was exactly my thought and it wouldn't have effected the rest of my day. . . but of course it did effect the rest of my day and will continue to effect the next week or so. (against my wishes) e.g. I can't watch the TV programmes that I would normally choose, I can't attend any football match that I may have had planned etc etc.
People should show 'respect' in their own way NOT have it dictated to them.
People from across the world will see a great show of respect and mourning which will seem to be spontaneous.
In fact, it's all highly choreographed and 99% false.

Thats true. I aint grieving, (I hardly grieved for my Dad who passed in Jan), had to help Mum instead. But it does feel, well, odd that she has gone, new King, all in space of a day or so.

I live in America. "Quality" over here is a very dubious statement for the majority these days, though it certainly beats out the alternatives in a lot of places worldwide.

I would also argue that what broad-based prosperity remains has a lot more to do with our government's possession of a very large number of assorted high-tech weaponry, and the resulting organization of the post-WWII international order.
And the wealth taken over by European settlers from the birth of the nation. And all that African gold you took from us after WW2 etc.

The queen was a lady i had a lot of admiration for. I found her visit to Ireland in 2011 to be a very moving and emotional occasion for some reason. She's lived a good life though.

It was the queens ability to make every person she met, no matter their position or rank in life feel important and better about themselves, that impressed me the most about her. This really is the end of an era.
