GOT Good Pub Guide

Years ago I was in County Kerry for a fell race. We stayed in Jack Welsh's pub, it is in the middle of Macgillycuddy's Reeks at the foot of Carrantouhill, Ireland's highest mountain.
The pub had a bunk house attached where you could roll out your sleeping bag, it had gas burners to make breakfast. The evening after the race we had a mighty night. We were there, the Southern Irish team, the Welsh team and a load of tourists travelling around Kerry on bikes.
About 3 o'clock the guards turned up to check the pub. The people I was with, being Nortern Irish, decided to pelt the guards car with beer tins. I was dispatched, being the most sober and sensible, to talk the guard out of lifting people. I was explaining how we had just raced up and down the highest mountain in the country and the lads were just letting of steam, the beer tins were bouncing around us. He just said "Youse northerners are shocking men" got in his car and drove off.
It was the best nights craic, the place just lent itself to mad nights.
We were due to go back a few years later but decided not to, we didn't want to ruin such great memories by going back to find it was a disappointment.

Never been (It's in Bexleyheath, apparently) but it's got a boss name

The snug in my local.

That chair, on its own on the back wall; no regulars ever sit in it. Said to be jinxed or haunted, and it does have an unfortunate record of too many folk who have sat there not living too long after doing so......

What's the name of the pub mate ?

Want to put it in my list of pubs to visit, plus I'd like my missus to sit in that chair for a while too !

The Goodmanham Arms, Goodmanham, East Yorks ( Yorkshire Wolds )

This was bought as a failing pub on the edge of a small village in the Yorkshire Wolds, by an Anglo Italian family.
To say they have transformed it is an understatement. It's without doubt one of the best pubs in the country now.

Non of the wooden furniture matches, there's a motorbike on one of the walls, the gents toilet is across the courtyard, the place is bonkers. The clientele ranges from motor cyclists, ramblers, farmers, cyclists, vintage car clubs, dog walkers and regular pub goers. After you have been in once, the owners will remember you the next time you go in.

The food and ale are incredible, nothing fancy, steak, fish and chips etc, but high end restaurant standard for a tenner. The pub speciality is a stew that is cooked in a massive open pot on the fire in the middle of the pub. They have built a micro brewery ( All Hallows Brewery ) in the pub outbuildings and sell three of their own ales, which are all sublime and retails at around £2.50 a pint

This is a truly special pub and shows what can be done by enthusiastic owners with passion and vision.

Undoubtedly one of my favourite pubs in the UK.

Great shout for the Eagle and Child in Oxford, down there this weekend and always call in for at least one will also be visiting The Bear which is hidden away but is a top boozer

Ty Coch Inn - Porthdinllean / Morfa Nefyn - North Wales.

Recently voted as one of the three best beach bars / pubs in the world. ( in North Wales ffs ! ).

Victorian fishermans pub and is still used by local crab fishermen to a certain extent, although now tends to be used by tourists and walkers ( it's on the beautiful Llyn peninsula costal path walk ).

Quite a limited selection of Marston's ales and simple, overpriced pub grub. ( virtually shut in the Winter so they have to kick the arse of it in the Summer ).

The opening hours are bonkers and it seems to be open when they want it to open - what a life !

However the location and view are the real reasons for going, look at that view !!!

The beach is outside the front door, so great to take the kids, plus the bay is shallow and safe for swimming .

Imo - best in September, still warm, not as packed and the sunsets are stunning over Snowdonia .

Anyone had a pint in The Old Forge, Knoydart? UK's most remote alehouse, accessible by boat or a 17 mile hike through the mountains.

Apparently gone down hill under new management - as long as it served beer I doubt I'd be complaining after walking all day to get there.

The Starr Inn, Harome, North Yorks.

Despite having held a Michelin Star for years it's still remained a cracking country boozer, where farmers, workmen and diners all rub shoulders together. Cracking selection of local beers and a massive selection of whiskeys.

There's a restaurant attached to the pub and there's also a fantastic high end bed and breakfast across the road - The Wheel House. ( expensive but worth it ). Whatever is on the menu in the restaurant can also be eaten in the pub too if you can get a seat.

Another pub that was on its arse and completely turned around and some by the new owners. They really have worked a miracle with this place as the village is off the beaten track and the pub was all but falling down when they bought it.

Highly recommended for a special occasion or if you want to take the missus somewhere special .
