Tower Bank Arms - Near Sawrey, Cumbria ( next door to Beatrix Potters farm )

It's actually owned by the National Trust as, it's part of the Beatrix Potter estate.

A wonderful pub, which in a big part down to the passion and enthusiasm of the licensee.

Superb range of well kept local beers, restaurant standard home made food at pub prices. Also does B and B, with decent rooms upstairs. ( good for a weekend away - not with kids ! )

Walked into a lovely looking pub in Stamford the other week, ended up being a Greene King pub. Such a shame, the offerings were GK, GK Gold, East Coast GK.

I couldn't agree more mate. Greene King are the equivalent of Pizza Express to Italian food .

They dress their pubs as though they are proper pubs, but in reality they are nothing more than an upmarket bland chain, where every premises sells the same thing.

Plus their ale is always served way too cold, which tells me the licensee is instructed to squeeze as much life out of a a barrel as possible.

Rant over !

Bit nearer to home - The Albion, off the City Walls in Chester.

A pub that has not changed inside since the First World War, as you can see from the pics.

Al Murray surely based the " Pub Landord " on the licensee of this place.

The pub is " family hostile ", does not serve " poofs or tarts drinks " cocktails or shots. Has no music or gaming machines and race goers are not generally allowed in. ( last time I went in, I went in through the kitchen as the front was locked up to keep race goers out ! ).

The licensee has been here for nearly 40 years and it really is " his gaff ". Compete with pub dog and cat, that steal your food if you're not vigilant.

The food is amazing for the money with the oatcakes being the pick at about £4.00 a serving.

A wide variety of real ales which are all perfectly kept and a massive selection of whiskeys.

A true gem of a pub.

I've just GOTTA take me arl fella there one day...If only to show him that blackboard! lol

Not a pub per se, however the Butchers on Booker Avenue in Allerton (the old Coopers butchers) sells Liverpool Organic and other ales on cask.

In an area so often dominated by the atrocious Greenhills, then it's a nice added selection to the area if you can't be bothered wandering to Pi.

Great shout there with the Butchers. It's refreshing to see a small place opened up that's purpose is to drink decent beer, rather than sell coffee and ciabattas !

There slowly but surely becoming more common with examples like Pi, The Butchers, Liverpool Pigeon and the Cask on Derby Lane to name a few.

A few more examples sprinkled around the city wouldn't go amiss of course, but you can't grumble as at least the selection is getting better.

All it needs now is the growing number of pubs that are selling real ale to keep doing it consistently, look after it properly and give a good choice.

For example, I went the Aigburth Arms (now the Victoria) the other day and they had Jennings Cumberland on. All smiles and happiness I thought...

... then I tasted it. Straight over to the Guinness as I'm not happy having having the wildies the next day. It's a start though!

Ps - the Greenhills is possibly one of the worst pubs on the planet !

They either keep it too long, to squeeze more money out of the barrel or don't know how to look after it in the first place .

Agreed, otherwise previously known as The Sheriffs' Bar. Always was poor although now it's just a glorified restaurant with a bar attached.

Poor ale, uptight and unfriendly regulars (the Tavs) who don't like new comers imposing on their rule and especially if you win "their" quiz.

The license is a buffoon as well but that's another matter entirely...

Often, although you can get contamination at the brewery or a faulty cask/shive/keystone that'll screw it up. That's why it's always worth letting the bar know about a bad pint. A good landlord or barman will appreciate it, they may not always be aware.
