General strike/protest

One way of avoiding junior doctors going on strike would be that we all go out in support of them.

Or maybe something that would appeal to this government more would be the withdrawal of services by a generation of dedicated people deciding it's not worth the years of long and stressful training in the first place. No skilled, committed doctors, no strike issues. Maybe they could use some of the staffing agencies for surgeons in future. Hire them, fire them. No contract issues.

Anyway, it's a sterile (excuse the pun) argument. My view is simply that medical people should not go on strike as it demeans everything they are supposed to stand for...........

The changes to their working conditions go against what they stand for. I don't believe theirs is a solely selfish action, most would tell you it is a stand to protect the NHS itself as well.

There is enough devious activity going on behind the scenes by this government, (and the previous one also, they're not exempt), to demolish the fabric of the NHS, it's one of the reasons they have so much public support.

It is a very 'British' institution, would have thought you would admire the stand in protecting the values of these lands?

As an outsider looking in, also as someone whose career is in the health industry, the NHS is an incredibly valuable asset insofar as it is the premier national health care system in the world.
This would in my eyes be detrimental to the NHS and is the continuation of slowly chipping away at what makes the NHS great.
The junior doctors are right to protest so as to protect their rights and the quality provision of care that the NHS provides.

All I've said is that I don't believe in medical strikes and I think it's a foolish strategy to achieve their aims......they will alienate the public......

Of course they are right to protest if they believe that what they want is for the benefit of the people who use the NHS. But protest can take many forms without strike action......

But support for their actions seems to be strong. They've been backed into a corner on this, and given the nature of the approach by the government, it is disingenuous to suggest they are going against their beliefs in provision of healthcare, they already go above and beyond in their duties in my opinion and that of everyone else I know.

REALLY???

I was a civil servant in the 1970s when the Heath government simply binned pay agreements, imposed a pay freeze, and sat back as if nothing would then happen.

A strike is NOT a type of blackmail, it is mostly used as a method of trying to get the Management side to see common sense about issues that affect ordinary working people, and on most occasions, get them back to the negotiating table.

The fact of the matter is that the government can afford to give the EU millions per DAY, can afford to give many millions in foreign aid, are prepared to put BILLIONS into archaic submarine missile systems (that have never protected us for ONE SECOND!) to keep their chums at the top of the military happy, while screwing the NHS down all the time.

Wake up and smell the f*ckin' coffee...!
You seem to be a fan of that relic Corbyn? But that is going down a different road. Doctors saying we refuse to do our job until you give us what we want, damaging people in the process is to me a form of blackmail.

How can refusing to do your job as part of a negotiation be blackmail? Is it blackmail to stand up for yourself in any given situation then? It's no more blackmail than you refusing to buy a product you didn't approve of.

That is a naive comment. These are Doctors we are talking about not someone serving you a BigMac..........the 70's are gone, and good riddance. I expect no better from the laughingly termed 'Civil Servants' who are neither civil nor servants, but I would expect more from Doctors..........

I would not say a word against any Doctor. My family, my wife and myself all have reason to support them. But 1970's trade union tactics is not the way forward and they are being badly led........

What would you suggest they do, bearing in mind the journey so far and given what most agree is at stake, i.e. the NHS itself?

Honest question.

I think they should make their case to their patients, they should spend time and effort putting across a picture that shows they are doing it for someone other than themselves. They should honour their contracts yet restrict themselves from the 'management' meetings etc. In short they should be as obnoxious as they can be without once affecting a patient. Let the public do the demonstrating for them while they maintain the moral high ground. Do NOT fall into the trap of being portrayed as a group who are concerned about their own contracts.......

Then you are sadly mistaken. Start with it's not what they want, it's what they don't want imposing on them that is the issue.
