Gana Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin

I'll give @davek credit as he's entertaining, whether he 100% believes what he writes is one thing. But being honest I fully expected this thread to be a load of blokes doing this....

In response to the OP, but it's been a great read.

Keep fighting Dave, I'm sure Schneiderlin will have a bad game at some point, then you can tell us all about it. Maybe even vault yourself back to this thread.

Barry
McCarthy
Davies
Besic
Gueye

'kin ell. How many more in your estimation does it take to have a surplus of cm's?

Barry - 35 last summer said it all.
McCarthy - been injured for most part this season.
Davies - Koeman trusts him and gives him playing time this season.
Besic - out for more than 7/8 months now said it all. Plus he is not proven.
Gana - signed by Koeman.

We lack CM options. You take Gana and Davies (signed or promoted by Koeman respectively) off you got an injured player, one player just getting back to full fitness recently and a 36 years old. Unless you have guts and put Cleverley and Gibson on the list. So to say Everton have enough options in CM and your point on Schneiderlin (you say we don't need him) are absolutely nonsense.

Gibson, Cleverley, McCarthy, Barry, Besic that should be your list. You know Martinez the best.

Why are people arsed how many fouls he gives away if he card count is relatively low? Lots of fouls these days and necessary and intentional to prevent counter-attack goals (instant yellow there) or just to disrupt an opposition team when they get too comfortable.

Our whole squad has been soft as tits the last few seasons I don't mind some yellow cards that aren't given to Gaz.

I absolutely love what Schniderman has shown so far, incredibly impressive how quickly he just plopped down into the middle of the team and became such an influence. Koeman likes to have a pivot point somewhere between defence and midfield, like a Pirlo-style deep playmaker, only more agressive. Schneidz plays that brilliantly.

Gana of course, has been absolutely terriffic as well. Love his energy and commitment. The perfect guard dog to the silkier types we have in the centre of the pitch. Does what McCarthy used to do, just much much better.

My only qualm about this whole midfield situation is that it might mean we are seeing the end of Gareth Barry's career. I hope he doesn't end up in China, for one. And also, i really want him to set a new record for most PL appearances in front of Ryan Giggs. I really, really want him to notch up 16 more appearances.

We have an interesting setup at the moment. Gana and Schneiderlin are great compliments to each other. Schneiderlin is capable of playing the long ball, and Gueye is similar to McCarthy in the sense that he likes to drive down field and link up with players. Both are capable of covering for each other if one decides to go down field. Add to the mix Davies and Barkley, who primarily play centrally, but since we don't have much in terms of wingers, both constantly alternate out wide to provide a different threat. This works because all of these players are very well rounded in their skillsets. Davies and Barkley both have enough technical ability to fill in out wide, so only one winger is required (Lookman, Mirallas). I'd still like to see us getting another big time wing, but Koeman is using his tools to his advantage. Our midfield is VERY GOOD.

Love to see that myself but to be honest, I can't see him making another sixteen appearances for us, all things being equal :(

It'd be a mistake to think of Schneiderlin as a defensive midfielder. Positionally I dont get that description. He's not a reliable screen for a back four because he goes to ground way too much and could put us in trouble payed that far back - and his disciplinary record underlines it. He's got the aggression of a CM but with a box to box game and the passing ability of someone who plays further up the pitch. I think that's why he couldn't nail down a place at United. Mourinho realised he was not a specialist: he had Carrick to screen the back four and control the tempo of the game further back and Pogba does the attacking and passing from midfield - Schneiderlin fell between two stools.

We have two out and out defensive midfielders at the club in Gueye and McCarthy, and thats why the latter has to be retained with Barry nearing retirement.

Schneiderlin has done well so far. It'll be interesting to see how he performs against top class opposition next week though. To date he's faced trash apart from a 20 minute run out against City when the game was over.

Anyone can screen the defence just take a bit of itelligence and experience which Morgan has got plenty of it. I agree he is aggressive for a dmf but the Sunderland game was a great example of how well he can play that role, dont think he went down to easily tbh. dmf is not a position that is played on one way, certain formations demand a destroyer type over an anchor type. I imagine gueye would be the destroyer and Morgan the anchor once the penny has fully dropped (which probably already did)

Edit: also koemans teams sit back rather than push the high line so less no demand for dmf to fill the defensive gap something Barry and McCartney were great at fraudos first season.

He gonna thrive at Europe next season so here's hoping.
