He had a squadron of Phalanx spearmen with large shields and spears. Should have used them against Jon's cavalry and used his own cavalry to flank and finish of the unarmoured wildlings (Kind of like how Tormund says to Davos "Remember that time you and Stannis battered us with your cavalry").

If he'd done that he would have finished them quick and been able to draw up into proper battle formation when the Vale showed up.

It may not make sense from a military tactics perspective (not that i will pretend to be a military strategist) but the slow kill makes a lot of sense within the context of Ramsay Boltons character

I agree and I talked about that in an earlier post that I understand the way things played out because of Ramsay's propensity for cruelness and to cause as much fear as possible.

I liked the fact that Ramsey's biggest tactical blunder was foreshadowed by Jaime Lannister a few episodes earlier.

When he marched his entire army right up to Riverrun because the Frey's failed to post look-outs. One reason the North was traditionally hard to conquer was that a small army could hold the Neck against a larger force. Not sure how the Arryn cavalry could sneak into the North without Ramsey knowledge unless (a) The Manderlys or the Reeds were helping and (b) Ramsey didn't have any spies/lookouts. I'd like to think they will explain/ret-con a lot of this next week, but I doubt it.
