His contract was up this year & we got an undisclosed fee for him. From the sounds of it we must have offered him an extension, otherwise he would have been released on a free along with Toto Nsiala & Adam Davies. He obviously wanted first team football so good luck to the lad. A top prospect. Here's hoping that McAleney & Baxter step up in time.

Yeah, probably a case of him wanting 1st team footy than us wanting to get rid. He'll end up being the next Messi now.

Very strange decision; he was the best player on the park against United reserves this season.

Very calm & composed, both feet, always wanting the football, great engine..

Walsall, Coventry, Burnley and Southampton.

Not the same as playing in the Premier League for Everton is it.

Played in the CL for Celtic and is now back in the PL with Southampton...hardly sank without trace did he?

If he was reserve player of the year and has just been sold to Brentford does that mean that our youngsters/reserve side are all a bit crap?

If so, why?

A club in our financial position needs to be producing more first teamers through the academy and if we're not surely there's a problem.

If you get 1/2 players from each Academy intake that make the 1st team you've done ok. The others - better to sell them than release them if you can, you get a return of sorts on the investment.

Celtic, though. They're rubbish.

He'd have been on our bench at best. I'd swap places with him, obviously, but it's hardly a massive regret is it?

Only if you want it to.

On the other hand, you might say that currently, with Rodwell, Barkley, Baxter and Wallace, plus the rest of the usual first team central midfield (Cahill, Fellaini, Osman, Neville, Gibson), already ahead of him, then he might not have had much of a shout. Each year at the club he had to be better than his competition plus he had to be better than the potential coming up behind him from the academy. This year he obviously wasn't (and each year the competition is more challenging) and he seems quite happy about getting out for first team opportunities.

Same with Bidwell. He not only has to try and prove himself a worthy deputy to Baines but he also has to hold off the more-touted Garbutt, plus be as good as any other emergency alternative (Distin, Neville, Hibbert).

Reserves Player of the Year mate - which makes it even more confusing. He should have been in and around the first team squad next year.

See: John Irving.

He won that accolade twice (Reserves Player of the Year), where is he now?

I wouldn't pay much attention to our Reserves Player of the Year - history suggests it's a nothing award.

The reserves really isn't anything compared to the real game though is it? Like people have said, those who are good enough are generally given a chance.

Edit: He could also just have been sold to rack up a small amount of money towards the transfer fund?
