I'd credit them with at least enough foresight to realise a fifth of any transfer fee for him lost would be stupid. I'm also not sure where this rumour has cropped up from? It sounds a bit Football Managery to me.

Probably the fact that Football Manager has a sell-on fee for Fellaini of 15% of the total fee, not the profit. Add 5% for people thinking Bill is sh*te at negotiating and you reach 20%.

The prime difference being that we only paid £2.3M for him

The 'additional' 10% of the original fee, only equated to £230K.

Your theory (which is based on fook all imo) would have Liege due another £3M if we sold him at what we paid for him, which is patently horse ****.
