I suggest that's not true. I would imagine that the difference it makes becomes progressively greater as the contract shortens. Put another way, are you seriously suggesting that when a player only has 18 months left to run on a contract the club says to itself "Absolutely no need to worry, he's got more than a year left so that's the same as having five years left"?
I don't have Fellaini's assists stats to hand, but I'd like to compare the two of them over the 2008 - 2012 period, rather than just one year. We didn't compare their international caps based on one year, or their goals. And why not also consider where PSG might use him? I bet SAF wouldn't just deploy him as a defensive midfielder if United purchased him either. it's not just about Chelsea and Real.
All valid points. Felli of course has the greater international experience by some margin, so I'd say in the balance they are comparable. In fact, I've already said that. Oh and look, Martinez cost £32m. So we are back to where I started, stating that we should be looking for more than that, and accepting bids of £32m and above.
The different approach was "sell early for big(ish) money; buy early (Pienaar, Mirallas, Oviedo)". I humbly suggest that represents a deviation from the previous model: "Sell Arteta an hour before the window shuts and desperately rush some loans in as cover". Totally accept your points re keeping it quiet, first offers and triggering auctions though. Definitely questions that the club should at least be asking of themselves, if not openly discussing in public.
Have you considered that Milan decided £49m was a bloody good price for the pair? Who do you feel did best out of that deal? I think PSG paid over the odds personally, and that prices are still inflated... Witsel for £32m mean anything to you? I agree that more than £32m would be difficult if there isn't more than one team interested, but just because there's no apparent interest now doesn't mean there won't be real interest in summer 2013, or summer 2014.
In the same way that Felli is, having played over 200 games for Everton and Standard Liege with more than four times as many international caps as Martinez whilst only being ten months older. Neither of them are the complete player yet, but they are both comparable.
You're applying factors specific to this summer and using them to suggest that Real won't be interested in a year, or 18 months or two years' time. Alonso will turn 32 in November 2014, and Fellaini will turn 26 in the same month. They might not want to pay £32m for Alonso to have a buddy now, but they will consider spending big in the next season or two to purchase his replacement.
Don't want to sell Felli to a prem team, so not as worried. Would be nice to have them interested in order to push the price a bit, but unless they are looking to move on from Mikel/Obi I would agree with you.
Fingers crossed we qualify for CL this year so that this argument becomes redundant!
