Tony Hibbert I was surprised at, although I think his pace got him out of the mess on a couple of occasions and Distin definitely helped him out. Doubled his value now that he's a competent centre half, to £3.99.

Hello TsarDiniyar, having said that Distin will be better beside Hibbert I will agree. Distin need Hibbert to help him with pace and Distin help with strength. With belief Hibbert can be great, we must believe for him.

Good result, impressive resilience considering our team. I think when Mikel comes back all our new players will stop getting frustrated with how [Poor language removed] we are and go, "Oh, ok, so this is Everton". Or at least I hope so.

Hello Brownie. Yes you are a great mind of football. With Arteta we can compete at greater level. New players can learn from experienced players, in this way they can learn from each other. Resilience and hard work are for our players to learn, yes Hibbert can show how. I am sorry for mention Hibbert again, but please look to this great player.

Bate v Everton

Played poorly last night but still managed to grind out a result never the less . Thats two games on the trot now that we have salvaged 6 points from games we really shouldnt have and with a depleted roll call . Maybe the worm has turned , I dont know but one thing is for sure these games coming up MUST be taken advantage of . Another 6 points is a real possiblity . That will really set us in the direction we need to be going .

On the UEFA front though we have given ourselves a great chance now . A draw in Benfica will surfice though a win would be great . Also from what I hear it is rough as fcuk in Minsk with a few locals up for a spot of sparring

You simply can't expect game would goes smoothly everytime for us, and coming out with a narrow victory is a must if we are to achieve anything in the Cups or in the league.

With key player such as Arteta, Jagielka & Anichebe coming back for us in the next 4~6 weeks, If no other major injure occur I should expect we have a full squad for selection by middle of November.

When you think about it, we could have Arteta back playing for us by the end of October and by that time you would expect Yakubu to be fitter by then, things would be alot brighter pretty soon.

Just lazy mate, thats all it is, lazy. Go into the match thread, over 2000 posts and you're not aware of the continuous dedicated match threads for every game, just lazy. Half a conversation in one thread, half in another doesnt work. (n)

On Howard....

One of the best keepers in the prem. Terrible from long distance shots. Does it make him a bad person?

My Manc supporting mate reckons United should've kept him being that, minus Van Der Sar, the rest of their keepers have been shiote. He made a couple of gaffs and they got rid.

Totally agree mate.

I don't know about you but I've played in nets for over 20 years and while Howard has faults as a keeper, you appriciate the things he does extremely well.

All keepers get caught flatfooted or slightly out of position at times by long shots taken early. You're playing the percentages with your positioning which folk who don't play in goal don't always understand however much they "study" from their armchair.

Yes mate, played in goal for a long long time too! Always stood up for Howard too as I just do not think some people realise just how good he really is. Last season he was being blamed for some pretty laughable goals and I said something similar as your post above and got slated by Halewood Blue for 'elevating the position to some kind of mystical status' I think!

I do think Howards position will leave him open for more criticism and maybe thats right? I will keep saying it though, that I would happily take Howards record over any keeper in the prem. Watching the Portsmouth game live on TV last week and I was thinking about people on here saying he hoofs the ball and he was playing a very high percentage of all balls short to the defense. Only once or twice did he launch it long just like any other keeper in any other team in the whole world to be honest. But, on here it was hoof ball all the time by the sounds of it.

We are damn lucky to have Howard in goal. He saved our behinds a couple of times against Portsmouth and got us 3 points. Thats quite important that. Clean sheets are a team effort but his role should not be under estimated in that, or our recent success as a whole.

Im in real disbelief that Howard is being had a go at here. That was some goal that.

Really made up with that win, we were down to the bare bones tonight and you can see just how much more experienced we are in Europe now compared to a few years ago. Everyone, despite some being played out of position stuck to their task and were patient.

Some special mentions, Distin was outstanding, commanding and dependable. Hibbert slotted in and done extremely well in the circumstances.

.

Well said Chico. That was a sensational strike - Howard was beaten by the pace - not the curl. If you watch the angle from behind the goal, you'll see the ball travels in a straight line and was still rising when it hit the net. He stood no chance and there's no shame in being beaten by a goal like that. Fellaini's another matter entirely...

Having said all that, the possession we gifted Bate wasn't used by them very well. They carved out relatively few chances considering that we often just hoofed it back to them. I'm no expert but that must be down to the quality of the tracking and covering that the backs did. Step forward Distin and Hibbert.

This game reminded me very much of Metalist away - we were out muscled for much of the game but took our chances when they came. Well done the blues.

No keeper in world football would've saved that shot.

I see people mentioning his positioning, where is he supposed to stand then, closer to his right hand post? Surely that invites the shooter to blast one in on the left hand side of his goal.

He was very central, a position most goalkeepers would be taking in that situation. I don't see where the problem is on this one, Howard did nothing wrong.

Im not complaining about that goal personally, unstoppable it was.

But in general he does get done more on long range shots than ones from 2 yards away.
