Everton v Espanyol

already on the koeman out train after only a preseason. nice.

nah, he gets one full season before I'm calling it that far (unless we're in deep trouble by Xmas).

He's not left much of an impression so far tho'...maybe that's a good sign after Bobby left all kinds of nice feelings once he came in, in the end it didn't help us much.

cheers lads...normally don't take much stock out of friendlies but still would've been nice to have played really well in one just before it all kicks off.

Stek over Joel?
One of those mate.

We just lack some spark going forward at the moment. IMO it's nothing more than a change in style and it not quite clicking yet, but it'll come. I think we defended well overall and I've got to say, I was very impressed by Espanyol. Flores will do well there and they've got a good side (getting Piatti on loan from Valencia could well make their season!)

I'd say Stek. A lot more commanding IMO.

When we didn't get any of our first choices (Emery, Jose, Löw) I was honestly happy to let Unsworth have it. Would've saved a few million in wages too.

Yeah I got excited when we were favourites to sign Emerey (fair enough we can't battle with the financial muscle of PSG) - but when Bill said "Koeman was our first choice" made it pretty obvious he wasn't

Was never a Koeman-fan myself...getting Southampton top 7 in the last two seasons isn't all that considering Moyes did that with us over 10 years. Otherwise he's done nothing of note in a quality league. Koeman's record in the cups is also underwhelming (bar one Spanish Cup win 8 years ago).

Spanish cup when the players were in revolt and apparently ignored his instructions as he was on the way to getting spains 3rd best team relegated.

See my posts on him since we were first linked...he NEEDS top signings or could be a real disaster.

No they do need to get a grip. It was a bloody friendly

He wasn't talking about the friendly on its own.

I think it's a fair discussion to not be too excited about the new management as it may very well result in bigger disappointment if it doesn't work out.

Until then we should all back him obviously - but there are concerns showing.

Last season we did not have a clue how to defend but we were good on attacking.
This season our defence has really tightened up but we don't have a clue how to be creative and attack.
It is so obvious why the manager wants to sign Witsel.

I have seen all the forecasts of doom regarding Spurs next week and I don't agree with them. I think it will a very tight closely contested game and for me has a draw written all over it.
Regarding the players today.
I think Stekelenburg continues to impress.
Coleman, Baines and Stones looked solid as did Funes Mori although at times he looks as if he can be very reckless.
Barry was his usual self and Gueye(penalty apart) will certainly bring a bit more bite to midfield , I think he will be a big favourite as the season goes on.
Barkley is a strange one, without playing badly he just doesn't seem to deliver on the ability he obviously has.
I thought Mirallas worked harder and wants to be involved but just didn't seem to create anything.
Deulofeu was again the spark of whatever creativity there was, gives the ball away cheaply at times but everytime he has the ball you expect something to happen.
I thought Lukaku was better today, but he is playing like somebody with no energy. He seems to be dragging himself around the pitch and just occassionaly bursts into life.
I thought Jagielka was solid as always when he came on and the other subs as well did nothing wrong.

But, we lacked a level of control and we certainly lacked spark and imagination.

Well that was rubbish. It will will be a completely different intensity next week. It's not panic time yet.

Moyes didn't get us into the top 7 for ten years. He nearly got us relegated in his second season.

The league is far more competitive now than it was even a few years ago, you're comparing apples and oranges.

Moyes got us regular top 7, there's really no other way of saying it. One blip in 2003/04, an 11th place also early on and an 8th somewhere...otherwise it was top 7 for the other eight seasons...a fair few 5ths and one 4th. We were the best-of-the-rest for that long period. It was a nice status to have, in the absence of trophies.

And the league is weaker now than it was then: breaking into the fabled Big 4 was near-impossible, those clubs were also dominating Europe. Now the big clubs have weakened given the chasing pack a chance. More competitive is one way to describe it...weaker is another.

The post came from a friendly result. Discussing lack of transfers is all well and good but until the window closes its a complete unknown. If we want certain players and we have to wait then so be it. I'm sorry but making signings just for the sake of it shows more panic than good management. This is going to take time but I'm pretty certain we are on the right track.

Weaker? Don't agree at all, there are far more teams fighting for the best of the rest, and anybody can beat anybody on their day.

ideally one who can dictate the tempo from deep as well. Barry will still be key for us this year but him and Barkley need help.

It's why I've got no issue waiting out for somebody like Witsel if there's a good chance we can still land him.
That will be depressing, If Barry plays week in week out. I just think we need better than someone who sits there and play 5/10 yard passes. He's to slow for what's required at the top end of the prem these days.
I can see Ali destroying him
Next week

Reminds me of Moyes, forced to sell his best players due to the club being skint, but still managing to get his team in Europe.

Yeah, but put it in context. Mourinhio had loads of money to spend and got Chelsea bottom half. Going by that logic he's worse than Koeman within that season.

My point is, even the best managers in the world would have been unlikely to do better than Keoman at Southmaption without significant amounts of money. Most of the big name managers do well because they have 'tons of money' and good tactics, and instill good discipline.

Koeman was successful with hardly any resources and his key players being sold. Give him money on top, which hopefully we will, and he should flourish.
