Everton and England

You should only be able to play for the country of your birth. If you happen to be born in an aeroplane over Oman then that's who you are allowed to play for..it's simple

Does that really happen mate? As someone who might be closer to the reality, would be interested to know.

..I'm basing my thoughts on recent events. As billycooper points out, clubs don't particularly nominate players (although Rodgers called for Henderson's inclusion last week), but the national manager will often see players from particular clubs as a safe option and momentum builds. For me the only real chance of a decent run will be to break this mould. On the world football thread somebody mentioned the likes of Rodrigues, Lallana and Delph, perhaps that is the way to go.

If you are serious, you are just wrong.

I honestly believe if you're born in a country then that's who you play for.... Does away with all this grandma was half Irish shizz.... Simplify the rules = lessen cheating and confusion.

While I think this might be a bit too strict. I generally agree. I'd say a country of birth OR the country you lived in for say 15 years before getting called up.

If you move when you're five...I think that's a fair pass.

I honestly think that would too restrictive. I think there should be some affinity with the country you play for, like a 2 year old immigrant knowing nothing but living in a country, or the child of English parents being born in Germany cos they were in the Army or something, but they move back when he is 1. Residency qualification is bollocks IMO, (that lad at Utd? He is not English. At all).

Going back to Grandparents I can live with tbh. John Hartson could have played for England, (not saying he would have though), and he said when asked why he chose Wales, "Because Im Welsh".
