Everton and England

We'll see. Past experience of England managers in tournaments doesn't bode well. Remember Mexico when Robson only played our lot after the Cockney divvies fell on their arses?

...remember it well. We had Lineker, Stevens, Steven, Reid on the pitch...and played well...until the hand of God. Was devastated.

Can I ask why my English mates seem to have such a tepid relationship with their national team? I know they haven't really risen to meet expectations in recent history. Anything else?

I'd put US Soccer above Everton any day of the week (bring on the neg reps!). And we've never won anything of value. Ever.

I've always viewed it as playing for your club is how you get paid, and playing for your country is an honor. One everybody does, the other is what the extraordinary do.

hate to break it to you, but you're scouse AND english.

Seeing England win a world cup would be fkn amazing. Some people (and this bit isn't specifically directed at sagey) seem to think that wanting England to do well means you're less arsed about seeing Everton do well, and it's nothing of the sort, the two are completely independent factors.

That's one thing I admire about Americans actually, they love their country and aren't afraid to admit and show it. We could do with some more of that in this country to be honest (apart from in the form of those BNP/EDL pricks, obviously)

Baines won't be an Everton player come the World Cup is my gut feeling.

And Davek. Some people like England.

(Always Everton over England though)

Pretty much my thoughts on the matter as well. I hope he stays but my gut instinct is that Baines will go to Man U in January. I wish him well whatever he decides to do.

You can support both but Everton over England all day long.

Should we ever qualify for the Champions League again, you'd imagine having players regularly exposed to international competition can only be a good thing.

Whilst there is the element that playing for England puts our players in the shop window, I'd prefer to think that them doing so puts us in the shop window for other players looking for a club whose players play at the highest level.

It's a good thing whether we're in the CL or not to be honest.

While many fans these days don't seem to value the national side, a lot of players (not all, but a lot) do value it. If it was perceived that it was impossible to get an England (or other national side, I suppose) call-up while playing for Everton, it'd be a fair bit harder to convince some players to come here, or for some of our own to stay.

Plus, lets say you're a foreign lad that might not have heard of Everton before, or at least not know much about us. If there was a strong showing from the Everton contingent at the World Cup then that would put us on the map in a big way.

God no, if I could withdraw them all from internationals I would. Apart from Kev and Lukaku obviously, because being Belgian is sexy and boss.

Can't stand the England set-up, detrimental to football as a whole in the country and don't see anything to be supportive of so definitely prefer out players to go and have a nice bit of a spa break for the weekend. Mudpack on their face etc than line up to represent the FA and the monotonous football played at national level.

Obviously, I wouldn't force them to withdraw, just give them a Champney's voucher for the week and let them decide.

England winning the world cup would not bother me or bring me any joy I just wouldn't care. I think alot of people brought up in this city feel the same. I remember being at a party when England played Ireland in 88, when Houghton scored the place went berserk.

I'm an American that would far prefer to see Everton lift a trophy than the US win anything. I mean sure, beating Mexico is fine and all, and if it's the only football on, I'll watch, but generally I'm Evertonian first, American second.

Part of this is because of the relatively small number of people that care about US men's soccer. I want the US to do well, but if they lose, I really don't care. As long as no Everton players get hurt, internationals are just an annoying break in the season and a nice diversion in the offseason.

That perfectly sums up how I feel about the English national team.
