I can't find the quote at the moment but Martinez has reportedly said that he wants Everton to contribute to the national team. We currently have Jagielka, Baines and Barkley in the squad. Gareth Barry could certainly push Carrick for his place, especially if United continue to flounder. And Hodgson has shown that he rates Osman. It would probably be a long shot but, if Wilshere or Milner struggle with form or fitness, Ossie could conceivably make the plane to Brazil.

Once Stones becomes a first team regular for Everton how long might it be before he's fast-tracked into the international set up like Townsend and Barkley as Walker's understudy too? In which case Hibbert would be our only senior Englishman not in the national squad.

And then there are the ex-Toffees in and around the party, such as Ruddy, Lecott, Rodwell and Rooney.

No, no, no!

Kin England.

And you just know that Cashley is going to cry off these next numb-nuts internationals in November and Baines will be playing both and getting goosed.

...when the major tournaments come around there will be a demand from other clubs for the inclusion of their players. If I recall rightly, Jagielka has been left behind for the last 2 tournaments at the behest of Carragher (came out of retirement) and then Kelly from the same club. Baines was left behind for Warnock. Jordan Henderson has halved in price (8-1 into 4-1) to make the squad and the momentum is starting for his inclusion. Baines and Jagielka are nailed on, but I wouldn't be sure of any others based on recent events.

Baines wants to play in big games against the World's best. If he impresses in the next couple of friendlies he might be able to claim the England shirt permanently. If that's the case will he feel that he can fulfill his ambitions and stay at Everton?

Baines won't be an Everton player come the World Cup is my gut feeling.

And Davek. Some people like England.

(Always Everton over England though)

Does that really happen mate? As someone who might be closer to the reality, would be interested to know.

Playing international football matters a lot to good players. That means if you want a squad full of quality you have to accept them playing for their country and support it.

The other thing is that it's boosts your own profile when one of your players does well on the international scene.

I don't think that clubs ask for their players to be included. I think that the international manager looks at our players (who have very little European experience) and feel that it would be less of a risk to take someone to a tournament who already has some big game know-how.

Each case is different too. I seem to remember that Carragher was included for his man-marking and leadership qualities and I think they'd experimented (disasterously) with Carra playing in front of the back four. Kelly was a back up right back who could also play at centre back. Maybe some of the concerns about Jags were that he came from a direct team in the Championship and he played for a comparatively direct team in the Premier League? His distribution hasn't always been great and he's prone to the odd unforced error. He's had some pretty serious injuries too, which could have been a factor.

The obvious thing for Hodgson to do is play Rooney behind or alongside Sturridge with Gerrard plus A.N.Other (Carrick, Wilshere, Lampard, Barry etc) behind them. I can't imagine that Barkley would ever get on the pitch unless there was a problem with Wayne and we were desperately short of creativity. But Roy might decide to take him just for that eventuality.

Hodgson will cave to the London media for Brazil starting line ups. Cole will start over Baines. No question in my mind. I'm not arsed if he does anyway. Baines is paid by Everton to play for us, not get knackered pulling his tripes out for those Crusading ****s.

Roy might find it difficult to take Cole and not start him. But then Townsend and Baines seem to be England's main outlets at the moment, so he would be risking the wrath of the media for being negative if he dropped Leighton.

We'll see. Past experience of England managers in tournaments doesn't bode well. Remember Mexico when Robson only played our lot after the Cockney divvies fell on their arses?
