Everton and England

Why would stoke fans want Everton to win the league mate ?

Even allowing for that:

Jagileka Polish family
Rooney/Carrick/Cahill Irish names
Hart Scottish name

etc etc

There's not much sense to it to me...at least for advanced cosmopolitan nations with a heterogeneous population like ours.

It's a patchwork quilt...a forced unity.

BTW, I'm not really bothered who plays for national teams (England can have 11 Gurkhas playing for them as far as I'm concerned). I'm just saying that as well as being a drain on our club's resources it cant possibly satisfy anyone either, surely?

I think that if England didn't have a team that the players would be poorer for their clubs for having missed out on playing against the world's best in international tournaments, training and playing with the best players from other Premier League clubs and learning from the coaching set up.

I think it's good for the profile of Everton too to have players representing their national side and it probably pushes the likes of Barry and Osman knowing that Hodgson will be watching and could consider them.

You could ask the question whether any of those players are immersed in their heritage or whether all they know is being 'English'. Would Barkley identify himself as half-Nigerian or scouse? Would Osman think of himself as half-Turkish or a Wiganer? If they have a reasonable claim to representing their country and it means something to them to do so, then does it matter?

I didn't know about this:

A gentleman's agreement among the Home Nations specifies that to qualify for an international call-up you must either have been born in the country, have a parent or grandparent born in the country or have spent five years in education in the country before the age of 18.
In June, the wording of the agreement was altered to "engaged in a minimum of five years' education under the age of 18 within the territory of the relevant association", which allows Scotland to pick Hearts' English-born winger Andrew Driver.

And this:

The little known Article 18.1.a within the Fifa statutes outlines that any player who has represented their country in an official competition, at whatever level, would at that time need to have held a passport for the country they later wish to play for in order to be permitted to make the switch.
In Arteta's case, because he played for Spain in the Under-16 European Championships and then in the Fifa World Championships at Under-17 level, the only way he could satisfy the current criteria is if he held a UK passport at the same time.

I like it when Everton players make the England team as it gives added interest to usually mundane international football. But, although I probably want England to win most games I have an overwhelming sense of dread of what will happen if England win the World Cup, it would be unbearable, with or without Everton players in the squad.
