Everton and England

I honestly think that would too restrictive. I think there should be some affinity with the country you play for, like a 2 year old immigrant knowing nothing but living in a country, or the child of English parents being born in Germany cos they were in the Army or something, but they move back when he is 1. Residency qualification is bollocks IMO, (that lad at Utd? He is not English. At all).

Going back to Grandparents I can live with tbh. John Hartson could have played for England, (not saying he would have though), and he said when asked why he chose Wales, "Because Im Welsh".
If I was in the army and my mrs was pregnant I would have sent her home approaching the date of the birth to ensure my baby was born in the country I wanted if I thought it was gonna be so important in years to come.... If parents are too lazy to ensure that then their children should have to be classed as German as a punishment anyway.

Lads, which would you prefer?

- Everton win the F.A Cup and England win the World Cup

Or...

-Everton win the league

Patriotism is for newish countries (usa included) peoples of long established countries have long realised it's historically a route to trouble.

It's all just become a little bit naff this "aren't we great" flag waving - commentators are the worst culprits they make my skin crawl with their idiocy.

There's no way you can reduce a complicated matter like ancestry, heritage, tradition and ultimately the identity of a person into a question of pure geography.

Let's take me as an example. I'm concieved in Poland by polish parents, but i was born in Norway and currently live in Copenhagen. Obviously, i should play for the brazilian national team. Pity i'm not good enough.

...the way its going, Blatter will allow transfers between countries. Imagine Spain putting in a bid for Messi.

Durham came up with something like that on Talk Sport, he said that a Country should be able to take someone from a Country that hadn't qualified i.e Bale for England, crazy idea.....................
