I would suggest that the Brexit issue has a bigger impact on the US, than their election has on us.

And there are plenty of UK contributions in that thread. Mostly bewildered ones, granted.

I'm saying there is a large degree of racism involved. Austria, for instance, have border checks when coming into the country from Slovenia, but not when going the other way. I dare say the stringency of those checks is based in large part on the colour of ones skin.

Both countries are part of Schengen.

Because racism underpins a lot of that. Those same countries, of course, want to preserve the right of their people to live and work throughout Europe, they just don't want Muslims coming to their country.

I've said consistently throughout all of this, and certainly before the vote, that Brexit runs a big risk of bolstering the cause of far-right groups throughout Europe, and that is a cause that must be resisted.

Bruce, the countries you refer to Visigrad, had made their views clear well before our vote. I do not think that our vote bolsters far right wingers in those countries or the others, it was already there!

Different parts of the EU are accountable to different bodies depending upon whether directly elected, or nominated. So for example the European Council is made of the 28 Heads of member states accountable to their own Parliaments, the European Parliament is made of 751 directly elected politicians accountable to their constituents, and the European Commission is made of 28 Commissioners nominated by the European Council and endorsed by the European Parliament for 5 year terms - the Commission is accountable to the European Parliament.
