The practical purpose is that the EU protects the members of the EU and puts their interests first. EU doctors get jobs in the EU, non EU doctors don't. We used to have that protection, now we don't. It's exactly what you voted for.

And I think you may be confusing the EU with NATO in your example

Anything that sounds French or German must be EU, Brexit = xenophobic it's the basic entry requirement. Besides think we actually need Médecins Sans Frontières here in the Uk after 13 years of Tory bureaucracy and Austerity we have no doctors ourselves.

In absolute terms, no, as the terms of operation with non-EU countries won't have changed. There will have been relative movement, of course, as the terms of operation between member states became that much easier.

Obviously any politician beholden to their electorate will face protectionist pressures, but I don't think it was ever an explicit aim to harm relations with non-EU nations.

Yeah, that's the point I was making. By protecting the interest of their members, it will obviously have a detrimental effect on non members.

People suggesting its not fair that UK doctors are finding it harder to get work in the EU is just about as naive as you can get.

This whole anti EU movement kicked off with angst against Eastern Europeans arriving in high numbers in the East of England to do cheap agricultural and fishing jobs. In places like Boston the immigrant population quickly became a material % and EE shops started opening all over.

That gave licence to the racists to jump on a bandwagon and fool the idiots.
