Problems at Manchester airport stem from sacking staff at the start of the pandemic instead of furloughing like most other companies.
Massive job for them now trying to recruit as the Christmas gets under way.
The mess is of the companies own doing.
They have something like 1200 jobs to fill.
It's gone downhill for years.
I used to work there years ago , it was really good pay at the time the council owned it .
They have since outsourced most of the work to private companies who pay buttons and run with minimal staff levels. And staff retention is really low.
I could have gone back there to work about 20 years after I left, got the job and when it came down to discussion over pay , I was shocked that I was on more all those years previously , not by a few quid literally half the pay.
Just binned the offer on the spot , they even tried to offer me a higher salary and I still wasn't interested.
It's hard physical work at the airport , the thought of doing it short staffed doesn't seem very attractive for low pay.
It's been going on years before Brexit read reviews for the airport going back years you will see the decline .
I came back from Spain about 7 years back and waited for my bags for nearly as long as the flight, asked one off the lads what was going on, he said we only have one crew on 4 men to unload the luggage , there would have been 16 at least in my time working there.
He said we can't keep the staff do are always short staffed.
I went on holiday last September there were 7 planes leaving , most half empty, they had to hold the plane back then because passengers were stuck in security, we got there 3 and a half hours before the flight and got on 15 minutes after it should have taken off, staff on security were rude and had no control at all, I ended up telling one to throw my bag in the bin as it was getting late for the flight he took ages and to be honest looked to be doing it on purpose, enjoying his power trip, he walked off midway and started chatting to his mate , absolute joke, his supervisor took over and was brilliant in contrast.
People next to me in the que were on earlier planes and i dont think the had a chance in hell of making the flights.
Coming back We touched lucky and got through OK, 40 minutes later there were delays for hours.
I am not using Manchester airport this year , if they couldn't handle 7 half empty planes on a Sunday in late September they would have no chance once it got busy.
It's going to be like this for months even then if its like in previous years it will not be great.
