EU nationals have to show a passport or identity card to enter ROI. U.K. and ROI have had a CTA since before the EU was even born. ROI citizens are allowed full access to any part of the U.K. and vice versa. The rest of the EU have no such agreement, if they wish to visit any part of the U.K. they have to follow normal 3rd country regulations. The principle is sound and I doubt very much that there will be any border checks, it will be all electronic…..
No it won’t Pete.

The point I failed to make last night in a rushed post is that this cannot work. Example close to home, I’m in Donegal now, we crossed the border at Strabane/Lifford.

Both my kids are blonde hair and blue eyes. They could easily be identified as Ukrainian as they could Irish.

There is no technological solution as you well know so how could this ever be enforced without actually stopping every car for proof of identity?

There is no need. Anyone found to be illegally in the U.K. without documentation can be fined or jailed, it’s the threat of law breaking that will make people seek the necessary documentation. I doubt whether the U.K. will even bother to check tbh. It will have no effect upon those whom the GFA and the CTA were designed for…I’m not even sure why it seems to be troubling the ROI people and government…unless of course there is another agenda…..

Pete have you actually considered that they're concerned not about going into the UK, but keeping you scruffs out?

And what do you think the agenda is?

We’re cancelling the electronics so.….

Stand down Apple.

Pete I wouldn’t apply for a position in the Northern Irish Tourism sector if I was you ….,”visit Northern Ireland, the giants causeway, titanic Belfast and Crumlin road jail - if your paperwork isn’t in order”.

Its already a wrench for EU tourists to change Euro to U.K. money, now they will have to apply for a visa - a lot will just swerve and stay in the South.

Very sad for NI tourism. Decisions being made from afar not in the peoples interests. Just like Brexit really, NI rejected it, but their votes didn’t matter, the forgotten child of the U.K.

Very sad.

In respect of anyone going into NI I don’t think it will be, but there cannot be a backdoor to the U.K.

In terms of an agenda, that has been pretty obvious from the beginning...to attempt to bring NI via nefarious means and Eu bureaucracy back into the EU and into the ROI.…. I have no axe to grind one way or the other in this matter, but that was always the intent from both the EU and ROI……

Of course their votes mattered, in the same way that everyone else’s mattered. The pro-remain government decided upon how the votes would be counted and how a final result would be determined. It was done for the U.K. as a whole, not by country, region or city…..

Kind of like if Crimea and Donbas voted in a Russian vote - they would have their own wishes - but ultimately gerrymandered into insignificance democratically. England dictates the vote really in the U.K. by sheer weight of numbers. It’s sad for NI, this isn’t good for them. Lads on here are living there and expressing their frustration and dissent, about this issue and Brexit.

You are just dodging the elephant in the room. There are over 300 border crossings into the U.K. but are you not counting those unless it’s on English soil?

It’s endgame now @Neiler.

Note how London declines to define how a border poll is triggered under the GFA. It should be a simple question. Further note how the population results of the census are staggered in an election year.

Not that religion by birth determines a vote but again note how Unionist/Loyalist representatives say that a simple electoral majority is not enough to to justify a constitutional change. For a state enforced on majority rule this quite the about turn.

Endgame indeed mate, but the goal posts will continue to be moved in London, or institutions will continue to be collapsed for another while yet and others will make decisions for the north, but they are increasingly acts of desperate self preservation. The momentum is there. I mean imagine your a moderate loyalist working in tourism to feed your family with this “dictate” from London coming in….

It’s going to be tough gig living in the U.K. for the next few years and ultimately I think people will make a decision on what’s best for them and their families, youl get the few red line bigots on both side - but ultimately the vast majority of people in NI I believe want to move forward and and progress regardless of what’s east across the water of south of Newry - it will identify with what’s best for them and what best represents them in the broader world regardless of London or Dublin - like being a part of the EU - I firmly believe despite the hardliners, the people of NI don’t want to hermit themselves away from the world like the rest of the U.K.. it might not be our generation that sees that over the line politically, but those Ukrainian kids of yours lol might lead us all to progress.

People of the north deserve to have their democratic wishes heard and honoured, every increasing injustice that sends its population into irrelevance like Brexit and this issue are ultimately fuel for change. We’l keep her lit in between! ;)

Just in the door from Clones, crossed the border 4 times over and back to get to Monaghan from Dublin, just goes to show how unworkable the U.K. governments plans are - they should honestly visit the country some time. lol

Tell you what though, roads on the U.K. side were in bits compared to the South, poor quality, poorly maintained and potholes all over the show. What’s the story with Petrol, €1.74 in Dublin this morning, £2.00 in Fermanagh - can tell you now, the cost of fuel in the U.K. isn’t Russia.

Congrats to Armagh staying up a Chara, staying up - great stuff!

You went the backroad from Clones to Cavan Neiler, that mad road that you are never entirely sure where you are ?

Any pints in Clones? As it was effectively our home ground for years it’s like a second home. Creighton still delivers with a feed pre game ?

On topic in this thread, it’s ludicrous to think that any form of ID could ever be enforced on land. What will happen of course is that checks will happen before a foot is even set on the sod, another ‘sea border’.

The disengagement process is well underway.
