Fair point. I came across this, which was based on an interesting Oxford study, which found, as you say, huge disparities in the carbon footprint of beef production

What is perhaps pertinent, however, is that they reinforce the notion that even the most carbon neutral beef farming is still more polluting than the most carbon intensive vegetable farming.

For @peteblue , the paper is here https://science.sciencemag.org/content/360/6392/987
There's carbon sequestering beef 'production' too, but not as a factory. Like the good soils in the European and North American plains that were fantastic for arable and horticulture were created by herds of millions of grazers in an appropriate eco-system.

Swell of concerns in the UK about Australian trade deal... From the even the smallest amount of imported produce and it's effect to animal welfare.

Small meat volumes and it's big effect.

Welfare practises in Australia banned in the UK.

Scotland and Northern Ireland are united.

You like things being spoonfed you by others, huh? It's hilarious. We've spent years saying that post-Brexit trade deals are laughable and will have no meaningful impact, and now we're expecting one with Australia to bankrupt our economy. I saw one person wheeling out Patrick Minford to support that argument this morning. I mean ffs. We've lost our heads.

“...Free Trade Hormones...”
Oh what it is to be just contrary...

Like this Bruce:

It’s mad.

Pre Brexit : Minford is an utter fool that rational economists laugh at
Post Brexit : Minford said something in that period that supports something I now think so he's credible

Immediately post Brexit : haha those deals Truss is agreeing are laughable and won't make any dent in the trade we're losing with our immediate neighbours

Slightly later post Brexit : Truss' Australian trade deal will destroy our economy

Me just an observer of farming with maybe a little more insight than the average city dweller. Given I live and work in a rural setting and often come into contact with farming communities, and when they are echoing similar concerns, as spoof organisations as you put such as RSPCA or First Ministers and various media in general and more specialist media for the farming community and it's organisations that represent it.

So armed with the benefit of hindsight of what's happened to our fishing communities from Channel islands to John o Groats, UK farming have every reason to be concerned, and Bruce all of a sudden farming internet expert ain't going tell me otherwise...:)

The fishing industry is worried not because of overseas competition but because they've lost access to their primary market. The two things are completely different. It's a funny world when we express great outrage over the state of food poverty last summer and similar outrage at the prospect (which I don't believe this deal will deliver) of cheaper food. You do wonder if some people would like to go back to the 1900s when 40% of the population were employed in agriculture, versus the 1% that are today.

I think the main issue, across the board, is that SME's are getting shafted by this government.

This is what is being warned about. The Australia deal sets a precedent that says we're here for the taking. Everyone else will look for the same access based on the principle of why shouldn't they get what others are.lol

Important that we stand our ground without losing out on any potential deal. Of course this requires skilled negotiation.

On a lighter note immigration rules are being relaxed, well for some countries...

Thank goodness we have "do-gooder lawyers"

I tell you something I found interesting. As part of my MA I did my dissertation based on low cost private schooling in Ghana. Loads of the official exercise books the schools provided had covers of premier league footballers on them. Found it a bit disconcerting that kids from families with barely any cash were learning with materials showing insanely wealthy individuals.
I think it would be an interesting study to look at the impact of the premier league on the perceptions of U.K. living as a whole. I felt it may influence people’s desire to want to move here. I tried telling guys that wanted to move here it was a miserable shithole but they weren’t having it.
Most the Ghanaians I met were Chelsea fans after Essien.
