Clutching at straws with this EU vaccine talk.

1. Individual countries can sign off and order the vaccines themselves if they so wish.

2. Vaccination will run in tandem with restrictions for months (if not years) ahead. Our sovereign right wing government have so far dealt with implementing/enforcing restrictions terribly (hence the huge death toll).

3. The vaccination program will go on for months/years. People will have to be re-vaccinated until the virus is eradicated (might never be). A delay in vaccinations of a few weeks is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things. It won't translate to much in terms of comparable death rates with other nations.

4. Whilst I have more faith in our medical institutions than our government, rushing through the approvals could backfire in the future once side effects are better known. Unlikely I know, and I would take the vaccine if offered it, but it's still a potential issue.

Thats the point many seem to miss. This vax isnt a silver bullet to make everyone immune; its a boost to our natural immune system to recognise it, and be able to naturally defend a body from it.

Its why only those at risk from flu get a flu jab. The vast majority just take a lemsip and jog on. The Spanish Flu might well be the common cold now, as an example.

Its why everyone has still had the usual winter stuff we always get. Our immune system knows them, so can deal with them. That is the idea with this covid jab.

Yep, that’s what the AZ CEO was referring to when he said that a single AZ ensures that you do not need to be hospitalised, you might feel a bit crap perhaps, but you won’t go to hospital or die from it.....I hope...

I don’t care about sovereignty. I don’t see a Tory government as superior to unelected officials in Brussels. Ive much less faith in Tory government than almost any other non lunatic form of government.

They are always self serving, callous, elitists and have shown time and time again, over and over that they don’t care about the majority of people in this country.
Agree very much with this

Its also why Witty has been consistent in saying the first jab gives the most protection, and starts the process. 0% to 60% after one jab, 60% to 90% after two.

I guess its like spending 5 years at school for 8 O Levels, then 2 more for 3 A Levels. You actually learn more in the first bit. But the mind has been trained to learn more stuff.

That’s neither here nor there.
The key is the various headwinds that we have in place economically that are going to impact us going forward.

So I look at the purely from an economics perspective and we are in a much worse situation than we were before we exited the EU.

You can talk about what may or may not happen in the future but we are starting with a handicap. And right now any potential improvement is make believe and not built on anything of any substance. Just hope.

Do you still live at your mums.....serious question

I would hope that this unsavoury episode from the EU, bullying and restricting vaccine exports, might open up some peoples eyes, but I doubt it. It should however ram home to the U.K. that they are not friends of ours, and in truth never have been. So we need to be looking to ensure that no vital facilities or infrastructure can be controlled by the EU because quite simply they cannot be trusted. Becoming more self sufficient in strategic activities such as we are facing needs to be a primary goal of government.
The thing is Pete, just as I don't demand that our parliamentary democracy be thrown out because I think the current government is crap, I don't think we should throw out the great many fantastic things the EU offers because they're not so good in other areas. The sensible thing to do is to accept that the good outweighs the bad and stay inside so you can work on the bad.

It’s a shame.....
As I say, it's not an area I know that well, but from the outside, it does appear to be quite vertically integrated, so it's not as easy to recruit all manufacturing facilities behind a single vaccine as many seem owned by competing pharma firms. I think we're building a national facility in Oxford but not only will it not come online until next year, but I'm not sure it would produce the volume required for a pandemic like this.
