As you say your mate can't at the moment does he think this is only temporary?
The message from business, and echoed by Brexiters as rationale for 'getting Brexit done' was to limit uncertainty.

I've not seen any estimate/guess/assessment/opinion given any credibility as to how long 'short term' will be. Have you any idea?

This is "global Britain"
'nobody really thinks that sort of thing'
'the public will be outraged if the Government do that'
'we always want to protect the most vulnerable'
If it’s for Patel, tell her to send them back.....

Don't think anyone has. I think business wanted the trade deal done. There is uncertainty no doubt about it but surely that was to be expected

There has been very definite talk of 'short term' economic harm, but it's never really been defined.

Most who I've asked, or I've heard in the radio, have done a finger in the air assessment and politicians have refused to be drawn in it.

As we are seeing demonstrated by Covid there are many businesses that cannot current negotiatiate a 'short term' economic hit - let alone one that might not be as 'short term' as predicted (based upon no supporting evidence).

It's quite staggering really. Even aside from the ethics of forcibly dumping human beings in a country they don't wish to be dumped into, it's almost certain that no removal agreements will exist with said countries.

So we have a situation where there is (yet again) hard-line dog-whistling to appease racists who don't want any brown people here that has no legal basis, all of which will simply gum up the whole process, costing god knows how much in legal fees.

It's all a continuation of the horrendous "hostile environment" and makes a mockery of our supposed desire to be open and welcoming to the world.

I don't even think it's 'brown vs white'. I think it's anyone deemed inferior to the English (I'd say British but I think it's a very specific English mindset).

It's about superiority and having power over others. It's the reason people can simultaneously talk about being bullied by the EU and unelected bureaucrats in Brussels on one hand, while talking about 'starving' Ireland and clapping Cummings 'making the left cry'.

It's why you get people (like Raab) who is clearly a student of civil liberties versed in the language of them but not the principles. Its about power and accountability.

Seeing the same thing in America at the moment

'time to move on', 'time to heal and unify', 'time to work together'

All underpinned with the caveat that 'if you aren't lenient now, then we'll be worse in the future'.

Anyway the EU...

We'll wait and see.

Haven't asked him, but I imagine he will probably trade again with Europe. If he is still trading at all... But it's going to be more expensive. Fine margins and all that. Difficult to pass on the costs to the customer as they'll just go elsewhere.

Have you tried draping yourself in the Union Jack and shouting "YoU HaD 4 YeArS 2 PrUhPAAAAAAARRRRRRE!!!!!". That should fix all his problems
