I see Merkel is now open to finding a solution to the border who’s name we shall not mention.......

Is there some weird streamed news-as-opinion channel from another dimension that only you receive, Pete? Merkel has been saying the same for literally months. The whole, entire, point of the backstop is that it is in place until workable alternative arrangements can be put in place. Everyone wants to find a solution to the border, and the EU and individual leaders have repeatedly said that. But the UK needs to actually demonstrate a workable alternative, and if one doesn't exist then the EU require the guarantee of the backstop to ensure the integrity of the SM and the safety of its citizens (and, in fact, ours, though you've shown no capacity to care about anyone outside your family).

Boris hasn't played some blinder that the EU have caved in to today; in case you missed it he was made today to concede publicly that the ball is in his court for coming up with something acceptable. Fancy that, a UK PM going to Berlin and being made a mockery of after his hardman-at-home leadership style.

In fact I never got round to posting this the other day but reading Johnson's letter to Tusk was painfully humiliating for anyone who likes the idea of a respectable Britain operating around the global table. It amounted to:

"We refuse to make a guarantee over the Irish border. In place, could we interest you in a commitment to one day make a guarantee over the Irish border?"

We're looking like total clowns on the world stage. Luckily, the orange chief clown is outdoing us by trying to make bizarre real estate deals for Greenland, which I assume he thinks is the world's largest pitch & putt.

It's amazing this hasn't been picked up more broadly.

The EU have simply disarmed Johnsons' assertion that it's up to the EU to bend. Merkel has said "nope, you put forward solutions, which you haven't done yet, and we'll listen - but they'll have to be pretty damn conclusive solutions and offered quickly."

It is Merkel who has played the blinder; she's played Johnson at his own blame game and put him in check.

When he fails to come with an alternative to the backstop within 30 days it will look like him who has failed.

Checkmate to Mrs Merkel.

And if he does come up with a solution?

Where in there is a solution? There's a line that reads "there is technology available". Which has been the claim by various Brexiters for ages, without ever going into specifics.

Indeed, a stopped clock is right twice a day...

You give yourself far too much credit mate, I haven't seen you be right once yet. I mean, essentially you're sniping insults at me for my claim that Nigel Farage, a professional politician who has led two parties and stood for Parliament 7 times in 6 different constituencies (so you know he's not exactly got 'being a good consitituency MP' in mind) wants to be Prime Minister.

By the way, I'm not saying this is a slight against Farage, just in case you're one of good old Nige's biggest fans. Swinson definitely wants to use the situation to cram the Lib Dems into a number 2 spot. The political scene is chaotic right now, and old party allegiances are crumbling. Why shouldn't the leaders of smaller parties makes plans to increase their profiles and vote shares?

The Daily Express? I mean I understand why you don't want to make it too clear that you're linking to them, but really? The Daily Express?
I just read the articles and found them interesting. If I buy a paper it's not for news but the crossword. Most of the time it's the Telegraph but if I'm feeling particularly masochistic, The Guardian.
