High tech solutions for the Irish border? The world has been waiting a while Pete....

Not really. The Eu and U.K. haven’t really defined what they want. Both have done work but politically the EU don’t really want a solution because they want the backstop to keep the U.K. in the EU. The political games will play out and the solutions will follow. But as I say, we have wasted three and a half years so far.....

Even just a guess at a high tech solution would be better now. Come on, Petey boy?

@peteblue @Joey66 et al What happened Johnson demanding that there will be no talks with EU until they offer a new deal and Backstop is dropped...
Now Johnson is hot footing it over to them with nothing changed... Is this the new and invigorating, more U-turn back peddling by Conservative government?

I'm overdrawn and don't get my pension until the end of the month. It's nothing to do with money for me, it's about leaving the EU on October 31st and if it means no deal then so be it.
At least you know how much your pension will be. Millions like me retired overseas, haven't a clue due to B inspired devaluation of the pound. At least you know that your health care will be paid for after 31/10. All we hear is about trade deals, it's about time for politicians to seriously consider citizen rights of the 1.5M UK people residing in continental Europe and Ireland and the 3.5M continental Europeans living in UK.

Bruce that’s disgraceful tbh. I am not blasé about things and never have been, but nor am I easily frightened by silly stories of the world ending just because we are no longer in the EU and unfortunately that’s all the remoaners are offering......
OK, now tell us exactly what brexiteers are offering. Explain the Sunlit Uplands.

Imagine that there is a town A with 10 people and a town B with 1000 people. Both of them have functional economies.

In one scenario, the political leaders of the two towns decide to unite the two towns. Nothing except the name will change. So, there is now a town C that has 1010 inhabitants. Will town C have a functional economy? Of course! After all, all that was done was subsuming two already functional economies.

In another scenario, a catastrophic event makes town B uninhabitable and forces everyone to leave for town A. In the beginning, it is completely overwhelmed by the foreigners. If there were any open jobs, there will be massive competition for them. If you disregard that the people from town B have demand, this is where the simulation ends: a community unable to deal with a giant influx of immigrants. But, in reality, this is not what happens. To meet what is mostly their own demand, they will rebuild the companies and factories that they used to have. This will create jobs that they will be happy to take, which ultimately will lead to an economic equilibrium.

After the initial shock, the economy of town A had to be restructured to account for the newcomers. This took time and patience, but it was not impossible. Once this was done, a healthy economy was the result. After all: They managed to have a functional economy in their own town, why would they not be able to replicate it somewhere else?

So, in this case, town A now again has a functional economy of 1010 people. But this is exactly the first scenario! Even though the second scenario looked dismal in the short run, in the long run, it produced the same result as the innocuous first scenario.

This means that your views on the economic consequences of immigration entirely depend on which perspective you take. If you consider the short term and disregard the immigrant's own demand, you will see the economy in dire straits. If you consider the long run and take into account the extra demand, there is no problem at all.

It's about those who voted to leave. The government had three years to sort it out but they and a remain parliament conspired to ignore the democratic vote. If we don't leave on October 31st we probably never will. Don't blame Boris, blame all those that came before.

It's not though. The government don't govern only for those who voted for them, they're supposed to govern for the entire country.

Pete give us an ounce of respect please. If there was a company or even a civil service bod out there with a genuine technical solution - Jesus they could write their own paycheck!

The fact nobody has out forward a robust answer - and even Johnson has conceded just yesterday it may not be possible any time soon - tells you there isnt a "high tech" solution out there.

A double edged sword... I see that the yellowhammer report (does anyone know how old it is ?) is stirring up a lot of emotion but it really is double edged. Remainers would like to think it will scare us all into delaying Brexit again, while those in Dublin are now saying that if this happens to the U.K., food, medicines etc etc, it will be even worse for them, and so pressure mounts for getting rid of the backstop......funny how these things work themselves out.....
What an odd thing to be positive about.

oh no ive consistantly said we will have a hard couple of years bruce … do keep up

but im quietly confident we will high jump all the hurdles and go on to see some very healthy growth for years to come without having to dish out and billions and save ailing economies all over Europe ...

Germany contracting as it is , should be a major major worry to any EU stalwart.
Why wouldn't they just think positively and grit it out with a bit of hard work like us Brits?

You can't argue that economic instability will be fine in the UK if we just ride the storm but Germany will be devastated by it.
