A bought and paid for political elite that represents only the deepest-pocketed has hollowed out America.
Populist demagoguery is the result, as the disenfranchised seek avenue, any (desperate) avenue to redress the damage wrought.
The whole system needs overhaul.

A two party state claiming to represent 318 million people is the issue, combined with a dysfunctional system which doesn't allow any change to occur.

yep, you and I agree mate. For a country that proudly declares itself "the greatest democracy on earth", it ain't really living up to its billing. In fact, it's failing its electorate terribly on that premise.

Such a wide political spectrum exists, yet is only represented by two parties.
It's a shocker. Drastic political structural change needs to occur for the long term survival of that country, it's fostered a stagnating state of affairs leading to these two candidates, who on any other given election wouldn't even have a sniff of being elected.

Oldest operating constitution in the world. It shows.

There could be another Tea Party coming up. Constitutionalists or such.

It structurally can't happen. Democrats outnumber Republicans. If the GOP splinters even further all of the pieces will wipe out.

Even the most conservative state in the union, Utah, can now be considered a competitive state. Because the conservative vote is split between Trump, Evan McMullin, and Gary Johnson.

Forgive my ignorance of American politics, but why are the Republics not the force they once were? Weren't they the natural party of government until recently?

Since the end of the 1960s, you've had 8 presidents, 5 of which have been Republican.

Immigration, on the whole, is a positive thing for a 1st world nation. People bemoan the work ethic of millenials (to which I say piffle, many of us work quite hard, and many more would had the economy not tanked while they were getting loaded up with student loan debt), but then complain about people coming in that are willing to work hard and get things done. But that's the red herring of immigration.

Immigration is a vital life blood for democracy and innovation. People and cultures have different ideas, and having various cultural ideas intermingle creates conflict. From that conflict we draw inspiration. So much of 'American' culture is just the intermingling of German, Chinese, Italian, Irish, Northern European, Indigenous, African, etc cultures distilled by time and trial. We need to accept large influxes of people precisely because our 'way of life' is flawed, but we will not change it without being confronted by alternatives...or better still amalgamations.

To think of the way the Right decry Mexican immigration upsets me greatly. I will accept that some Mexican immigrants may commit crimes, but the vast majority of them simply add a rich culture to our national tapestry. Mexican culture and people are absolutely wonderful and insightful and interesting. I don't see why we would want to ban them outside of some base fear of the 'other'.

yeah inmigration, not illegal immigration.

Roughly even in years controlling the presidency, think Republicans have a slight edge in that time frame but that may change with a Hillary presidency. In Congress, Democrats have dominated until more recently.

Granted, there are a couple of caveats to this.

-Both parties are way more ideologically pure than they were for much of history. Moderate (center-right, really) Republicans and Democrats used to both be pretty common and would often overlap but be from geographically different places. A Dem from Montana would have pretty similar positions to a Republican from California, for example. That's changed. Nowadays, basically the Democratic party is center to center-left by European standards, and the Republican party would probably be considered right wing, with no overlap between the two whatsoever. This centrist purge has all happened in the last 8 years or so.

-Party identification doesn't have quite the same meaning over here. Democrats outnumber Republicans, but Republicans often tend to win independent voters. I think the current split is somewhere around 30% Dem, 25% Republican, 40% independent. That independent number has spiked in recent years, with both parties losing ID'ers but the GOP moreso. Buuut the electoral results haven't changed all too much, suggesting that even though more people are identifying as independent, they're still voting the same way.
